though I didn’t partake in the first Sunday sales, Indiana now permits liquor stores to be open on Sunday. Newspaper said we were the last State to rid ourselves of this law.

I can’t tell you how many fights have occurred over someone getting into another’s “Sunday beer”.

We may allow public dancing next

I stayed out of the beer stores today but it was odd seeing the parking lots packed with people on Sunday.

I'm sure plenty of selfies were taken at the registers today haha.

I don't drink either, but growing up Maine had some strange Sunday Liquor sales too; something like you could not buy beer before noon on Sunday?

We got a few laws that I think all states should have though. Our bottle redemption is the best in the country, and we have people walking the roads picking up "returnables" to cash in for 5 cents a piece. What qualifies as "returnables is staggering now! Milk, juice, soda, wine, liquor...all counts, the glass ones worth 10 cents!

Another great law, but sadly is not enforced is the one about NOT having Christmas Lights up after January 15th. I am not a big fan of Christmas, Christmas Lights even less so I say fine the lazy people that can find the time to put them up in August and not take them down on January 15th; or who leave them up all year.

Another great law, but seldom enforced, is those jerks who plow snow ACROSS the public road at the end of their driveway. They inevitably leave a trail that spills into the road that we have to bust through, a sad state if you have a Ford Focus. Even then it produces big piles of snow that more than one snow plow has broken his wing on. (And yes, here in Maine we use wings on our snow plows because it snows...a lot).

The best law though is the one where a woman driver of a horseless carriage has to have her husband proceed her at a 4 way intersection waving a red handkerchief with his hand to warn other drivers of a woman's approach with a horseless carriage. Oh does Katie hate this when I make her stop and abide by this 110 year old law, but it is the law.

Yikes. In Wisconsin we can buy 7 days a week. Not that I would know .

We just got rid of the Sunday Blue Laws dealing with alcohol a few years ago here in CT. You can now buy on Sunday; and can even buy as late as 10pm during the week! Not so long ago it was 8pm and no Sundays.

Interesting that the liquor store owners didn’t want it and defeated the attempt last year. Reasoning that dollars per days open would diminish while annual sales would be the same.

    I know. And I do.

I've visited Indiana many times, lived in Maine, and spent a ton of time in Oregon. All those places have it had odd alcohol sales rules.

In Wisconsin, our churches have festivals that serve beer. We drink in public, even using the beer holders on our tractors for mowing the lawn. Our German ancestors made beer a social activity.

Massachusetts used to have that law. It as repealed a while back. At first, nobody was open. Then, they started letting stores within x number of miles from the border of a state that sold on Sundays be open. Then they finally just gave in and repealed it.

I remember well when MI changed the law so that liquor could be sold on Sundays. A big social thing to argue about for many but it soon passed and is now accepted.

I also grew up in dry township. Not even beer could be sold at any time in the township. Today, that township has finally changed....but there are no stores left in the township to even sell it. Strange twist of fate there.

    Whats the big deal anyway?

Can't remember to buy enough booze in advance so you don't run out on Sundays?

Maybe its the same customers that clear the shelves of bread and milk when a snowfall is forecasted??????:D

Still can't buy cold beer except at a liquor store though....but you can buy warm beer at the grocery store or gas station.

Meanwhile, almost everywhere else, this isn't a problem

I love reading about the obscure laws over the years. Georgia finally allowed Sunday sales a few years ago, and even the doggone governor was involved...he didn’t want it. I could have gone either way, sure found it convenient to grab some beer or a bottle of whatever along with the groceries all in one stop (Costco had a beer and wine section along with a liquor store).
...I can picture Katie’s middle finger raised now, as LodgedTree gets out of the car with his red handkerchief to warn other drivers that she is entering the intersection...”Babe, don’t be mad at me- I’m just following the law.”

It’s frustrating as there is a heavy German heritage in mid to southern Indiana especially. I have heard rumor that Jasper firefighters have kept the clause in their labor contract on their beer allowance per shift. I think to an acknowledgement to their German foundation rather than actual practice.

Location of my tree farm is near Tell City which has an annual Schweizer fest. They have a beer garden during it, but it is partitioned off because they can pretend adults don’t drink around children at home.

I am a proud Hoosier but some things are tiresome here.

Yeah, well of course. This leads to competition when the laws are relaxed further to allowing just about any retail establishment selling beer and wine.

I kinda miss the days of Sunday being a Sabbath Day and/or a day of rest.

No selling beer on sundays sounds like english laws, good you got rid of it.

Wisconsin sounds like a good place to me. German-US heritage: Pabst, Schlitz, Bud, Miller...Jacob Böhm/Jim Beam. Krauts appreciate the drinks...sweet sixteen is legal age for buying beer and wine overhere.

People dont drink in front of their kids? I mean its common sense not to get wasted infront of your kids - but a few cold ones wont hurt i reckon. Whats the reason if i may ask.

I think it is Goshen Indiana isn't it where they don't participate in daylight savings time? Neither does Arizona or at least parts of it.

Now that should be a law we all agree on; eliminating the whole changing-of-the-clock thing. personally, I think it is stupid. I am not even sure why we do it, or if anyone else even knows. But then again, if everyone is sloshed on Sunday, what does anyone really care. They wake up in a groggy state and ask what time it is, and people tell them.

I actually hate driving so most of the time I let Katie drive and am perfectly happy with it. I know you were teasing me, but if you knew Katie, she is wayyyyyyyy to shy and quiet to ever use her middle finger, I have never once seen use her middle finger on anyone, but we were up in Greenville, Maine; a rather small tourist town, and she was wearing her little red dress and it was causing some issues with traffic in the intersection.

Maine has some really funny obscure laws. I cannot remember what town it is for sure...Bowdingham or something, where it is against the law to take up all the parking spaces in front of a Dunkin Donuts because one space has to be reserved for police officers. I am really surprised late night comedians have not picked that up and run with it.

I was being sarcastic about not drinking in front of kids. My point being they drink at home and at barbeques- but why is the area partitioned off, that adults and younger can't mingle in it? seems hypocritical.
