...of the 2017-2018 firewood supply, as evidenced by the attached photo. I have half a day of wood left, which will be placed in the OWB this afternoon. After that, I am into 2018-2019 firewood, and I probably have a full two months left of burning before I can reasonably switch to my (non-existent) electric heat pump backup system. Non-existent because the backup system still needs to be installed. I have not burned any junk wood, pallets or anything else this winter, and I started October 1, 2017 with a full six cords in this shed. So, I got just a hair over five full months of burn time out of six cords. The cold snap in December ate a lot of wood - way more than I expected to. I anticipated a cord a month. I have a full six cords already put up for next year but it look like I will need to add to that - I'll have to plan for eight cords a year from now on. Time to add on to the wood shed! Lucky for me the wood for 2018-2019 is nice and dry and ready to burn, and I have 40+ cords of oak, cherry, maple, beech and birch on the ground for the next few years' supply.
That is a lot of wood to burn in one winter. I only burn around 3 cord a year and I would be hard pressed to keep up with 8 cord a year to keep warm.. If anything else it should keep you in good shape.
Thank goodness for these guys harping about the three year plan. I'm not even really burning wood this year, but that long stack out by the front fencerow gives me a HUGE reduction in anxiety. With the pellet stove I'm totally dependent on a supply of pellets, and electricity. With the propane fireplace I'm dependent on the propane delivery man, and a fickle market. With the wood stove, I'm obviously a lot more dependent on the hardware. The truck, trailer, saws and splitter, at a minimum. But, I have a seemingly never ending supply of ash, and other hardwoods.
Yeah. Right. This area got blasted last Friday and it looks like we're in for another coating of white on Wednesday. We got a week of temps in the 50's and people are thinking Spring, I told them that we get the worst storms of the season in March. I can bear cool temperatures in order to avoid burning wood, but I also make hot water with my wood supply, so until I get my backup system installed, I'm still burning.
Sorry to hear that, if I lived closer I would give you some extra firewood I have! Growing up, between my parents (12 cord) and my Grandparents (13 cord), we had to put up over 25 cord of firewood every year. My parents home was just a straight wood stove and was 12 cord, but my Grandparents had smaller sized kitchen wood, then wood that went down cellar, then wood that went out in their greenhouse. It was a lot of firewood, and it was not unusual to have neighbors ask for firewood help. I got paid, but some years I had closet to 35 cord of wood go through my hands. Over the years I have grown fond of mechanized firewood systems, and propane. BUT, as you said...it costs money and is a fickle market.
Ironically, looks somewhat like my hardwood stash in VT right now. I've got under 1/2 a cord...flanked by about 2.5 cords of pine. Wait until I tell my wife I may need to order firewood....
Not a good thing to be running out of firewood in March. Must remember this for next year and the years after.
I still have about 7 cord of dry wood, so I'm good, but that was all gonna be for next winter. Splitting about 8 cord of Silver Maple now that will season quickly, so no worries. Just a bit more work.
Scary sight! It's good that you have another stash - better to burn more than planned than it is to be cold. I'm cutting in a lot of pine and willow lately with the warmer temps. Hoping to get through the rest of burning season without breaking into next year's hardwood stacks. I'm about 3/4 through the 8 cord rack put up for this year. The owb eats the soft stuff fast, but that's what it's there for.
If you think you need 3 cords a year cut 4 If you have year that you burn 4 cut 5 Or just go cut as much wood as you physically can store you'll burn it someday.....
I can feel for you. I normally burn around 3 cords per year. The end of Dec and Jan. cold snap put a big dent in my supply. This year we are approaching 6 cords. Thank God I was a little ahead. Going into this season, I was working on a 3 year plan and figured I had most of 2020s season CSS. More CSS this year I guess.
