Have a guy coming to the house to make a slip on wedge. I want a 6 way wedge. Would love to hear your thoughts. Do you think a 4 way is better than a 6 way? I have a 35 ton huskee with a 16.5 hp kholer engine. I burn alot of wood. 30 fc a year. Want it to slip on so i can take it off for knarly pieces or too big.
I had a 4 way wedge on a splitter. They work good when the wood is the right size. It becomes a pain taking it off and putting it on all the time. I say go with a box wedge. It will be more work but faster.
I think the size of your typical rounds and the size you prefer your splits to be would dictate either a 4 or 6 way wedge. Smaller rounds and a 6 way may leave your splits small. Dry quick but burn quick too. Whereas large rounds and a 4 way may require you to resplit splits, which you are used to with a single wedge. Post some pics or better, a video of what you come up with and in action. I would be interested in a slip on wedge.
This is the wood i had dropped off. Theres about 90 sticks of red oak. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
Those box wedge style splitters are real nice, the splits come out nice and square. WoodMizer has a couple of nice ones as well
I think the correct answer is yes. He probably needs both a 4 way and 6 way. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
This is what the guy made up. I might wanna change a few things but gonna run it a little bit till i can figure out what i doknt like and what i wanna change. Im gonna make the wing edges sharper i think. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
That is not my splitter it was just the first video I found with a box wedge. Yes, it was a Timberwolf.
If he makes you another one get him to make the point sharper on the 2 way portion. I used 1/4'' for the 2 way portion on mine then 1/2'' for the wings.
Like that. I think i might bed able yo make a better point. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
I like it! So what are your thoughts on the modification? Likes/dislikes and what you would possibly do differently if you had to do it again?
Im gonna have to make some more nods. It needs to fit better it moves to the left or right and then wants to move the splitter head with it. Worried it might damage the cylinder. The point needs to be sharper and taller. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk
When I built mine (4 way), I made the flat ram base and single splitter high, then on the 4 way, made it low...solid welded to my splitter. In this way if I got into gnarly stuff I could just split the gnarly piece in two, but for wood that I thought would go through the 4 way, would lower the splitter onto the round and split it into quads; the best of both worlds if you will. Now mine is homemade and upside down, but it would still work on a regular woodsplitter. For the gnarly pieces you would just have to hold the piece up past the 4 way part until it was pinched, then split it in half. If it was too heavy and big, just put a small piece of wood on the beam to hold it up and split the gnarly piece. I could never understand why commercial splitters did not do this; they leave people to wrestle with a removable 4 or 6 way wedge. It is hard to see in this photo because the ram is not fully retracted, and the splitter is still suspended and at an angle, but the flat ram, and the wedge are quite high. I could split this round in two, OR lower it even more and split it into quads. Flipped right side up, a person could still do the same thing.
