BSR are great pans, and that one looks fantastic. Nice score at $10. I have one, a #8 I think(starting to loose track). It gets regular use.
Sorry to hear about the Mrs not feeling well. I'll be "in town" tomorrow after a little work in the morning, going to hit up the salvation army/good will stores. To my mind they used to be full of cheap cast iron, but there's too much hipster activity lately for them to survive long it seems. My last good thrift shop score was a big garage radio for $5, talked down from $12 since it didn't have any speakers.. fine with me, since I had a few needing some use anyway.
Please don't cry! I already did! Last night we had some 70mph winds here and the wind got a hold of this on the hanging rack, needles to say it's a done deal... I know some of you would have killed for this pan. "Note" it already did have a small crack in it and was primarily a decoration. Yes, a Griswold #12
damm that sucks! Glue it together with JB weld, cover with black spray paint, and put it on eBay for $800.
A question for WeldrDave . Does electrolysis remove paint from the outside of a cast pan? Would oven cleaner work? I can't say for sure if it is paint, but it looks too shiny on the outside, more so the walls, the very bottom within the ring looks just seasoned to me. As you can imagine I'd rather clean a BSR a little gentler than I would a taiwan pan.
Start with oven cleaner first! Get the easy off killer stuff!!! But yes the electrolsys will take it off, but it wll start taking "everything off".
Ok, Today I got one little piece I've been hunting for. Reasonable price also, I gave $16.00 for the Krusty Korn pan. It's only real value is about $20.00 but I was hunting for one. BigPapi, I did find you a #7 round Wagner griddle in Very nice shape, the had a #8 there also but it had a warp in the belly. It was at a consignment shop and the guy wasn't budging at all! I was even using my flair of Bu!!$#!T to get him to move but he didn't. They are both $35.00. To me, that a bit on the high side. The #7 is flat and in "very nice shape" but remember, it's a #7. If you want it, I'll go back and get it and mail it up to you. Not a big hurry and I don't think it'll sell today, but let me know if you want it, I'll be happy to grab it for you.
I'm not too concerned if I have to start back from bare cast iron to make it perfect. My beater taiwan pan was good practice, and anyone who didn't know better, would think it's been a daily cooker for some time. There was the incident of hot pan and searing an elk roast that put it over the edge towards greatness. Definitely will try the oven cleaner first though.
Here's a past tragedy. Was at moms place earlier, and we were talking about cast iron cooking. She bought me a pan for Christmas, so I always send pics of food cooked in it. Anyways, I told her I'd take her big cast pan home with me and give it a seasoning so it's good to go for cooking. Turns out it's a Wagner Ware #12 something, but has a bit of fire damage in the center, and is warped. I gave it some love best I could, but seasoning won't stick in certain spots. But I did what I could. Sorry for the wonky spacing, typed it on my phone.
Dave, you're about the most thoughtful guy I know! I must be looking in the wrong places on this here internet, because I can't seem to find a measurement on the #7 griddle. Would you say it's bigger than 8.5"? That's what I'm trying to "upsize" from.
That's why I've written many times saying not to get pans too hot or throw them in coals or fires. That's exactly what happens, That's sad saskwoodburner, But it's still a real nice camping pan and you really can't hurt it. A #7 is not 7" Actually it's about 9". The # stamp on pans were for the size "heat ring" size on the old stoves years back. Like a #10 pan is actually 12-1/2" across or there about. Well, I'll keep my eyes open for a bigger one. Don't forget though, the bigger the pan the bigger the $$$
Well, after the big Griswold broke I didn't have the heart to throw it away. So, I used it for target practice at 100 yards! At least I sent it off with a "Bang" I didn't do so well but I did hit it with all 20 rounds.
