Oh believe me I know, I've got that locked down, I just need a catchy, or self explanatory, localized name, to top it off. This guy I made the tool box mounts for has had me working on 4 or so different projects, and I only finished the mounts two weeks ago! :D

I clicked your location and saw a lake. and it was in dunn county. people remember simple names.

There is a car dealer here named Jabco Maggi. ...Yea...thats what I thought. Sounds like an infection.
Why not just call it Five Star. Or Courtesy or anything that sounds somewhat normal.

As long as your customers are happy, the name probably doesn't matter.
Personally, i like to make it simple:handshake:

I didn't even think of the dunn county thing, even though I knew Menomonie was out there.

    Shaggy,
I thought you were in Menomonie, Michigan not Menomonie, Wi. hell you're only an hour from me. I will bring you some work because my guy Charlie is farming like crazy and welding has taken a back seat. Send me your contact info to my business email: [email protected] .
Plus, I know Menomonie real well since I got my BS from Stout in 1975. Great school. The second best decision I made in my life was going to Stout. The first was asking my wife to marry me.
I got a small Bethany camper that I want to make into a dumpster holding trailer, I need a frame welded up on that. I think I got the square 2" tubing but my guy Charlie is busy farming not welding. Send me an email how I can contact you. Ok.

Cough, should've gone to Stevens Point, cough cough... :emb::whistle:.

My parents went to stout, I went to point. Those two colleges have a rivalry despite stout getting owned in every sport by point.:D

    Horkn,
Not to bore everyone else but my grandparents dairy farm was just outside of Point in Knowlton, Wi. My parents were married at the Catholic church on the shores of Lake DuBay. Stevens Point is a great town, or Point as it is called.

Well guys and gals, I think I've decided on my business name (at least for the business cards)
    Dunn Right Welding
    Serving Dunn counties welding needs
Any thoughts tweaks variations suggestions input anything? It's much appreciated!

I'm thinking Dunn, starting with a d should be one of the very first to pop up if I should ever be searched for, Dunn being localized to me, Dunn Right being positive and Dunn Right Welding, sums up what I do. All in all the name sums up the business motto, welding done correctly in and around Dunn county.

Hey all, just wanted to update, as of tonight, I registered with the state for a LLC. Called, Arclight Custom Welding LLC. My original post about the business cards I just went with a simple design and statement with my name and a bunch of project ideas I've done. I had those made not long after the post, I'm about half way through 1000 of them. Been keeping busy most every weekend since October plus a few long nights after work. So a big shoutout to Beetle-Kill I had remembered this name for quite some time and remembered this post and looked it up.

Finally taking the step tonight was certainly not from a lack of ambition on my end, mostly from a lack of time, working full time, getting married, and now expecting a little bundle of joy, (that's my big announcement here btw) sidework and working on the house life has kept me busy. So now I wait 5 or so business days to make sure everything pans out and take the next steps going to the bank, getting a tax number, chatting with my tax guy etc. Thanks to everyone for all the help and ideas, I ended up choosing this for a few reasons, 1. If we move back to our home town, I can easily bring it back (not location specific) 2. In the case it starts getting real big, which honestly I'm fine with keeping it small and local as of now, it's a name that would be taken seriously, possibly unlike shaggys welding. 3. Custom keeps it open to aluminum stainless and mild steel, repairs, custom builds, prototype, and possibly production. 4. A in Arclight should help with anyone who calls the first number they see in ads/yellow pages.

Through the years I’ve had men tell me that when their business got bigger is when it fell apart or got complicated. I’m sure that’s not everyone’s experience, but I’ve heard it mor than once. Good luck with everything!

22 year's ago I started in my garage doing side work. Money was good, I was at home, no employees, taxes were simple...... Now 5 employees, 12 hours a day 7 days a week, dog forgets who I am, taxes workers comp sucks.....
    Living the American dream !!
I would suggest that you contact local machine shops, a lot of them will farm out welding.

Thanks for the tip! When and if I start getting slow or nervous, that's been on my list, that and other weld shops, looking to sub out projects they can't make the margins on etc. So far I've been doing mostly legs for high end tables for what stated as one customer, and has been growing to 4-5 more . That's kind of my bread and butter, minimal material, simple weldments, mostly labor profit. The place I do my powder coating at had sent a few jobs my way because of it.
I haven't really searched a whole lot, I'm still working full time at a place that pays pretty well, doesn't work anyone overly hard and they treat us right, for the most part anyways. Not to mention I've got a few things to take advantage of with vacation coming up. But when the day comes I have enough saved up, a good customer base and I'm just %100 ready, physically, emotionally, time wise ready and shop space/capacity ready, I'll quit. Possibly see about reduced hours. But if I were fired tomorrow, I wouldn't be terribly worried, having that feels pretty amazing. %75 of what I make in my shop on the side goes right back into tools/equipment for more capacity, next on the list is a slab on the other half of the garage, I'm working in basically a 2 car garage, I could double that with the slab. After that it'll be a few years before I put up a real shop. I'm pretty comfortable with where I am right now, and if something drastic changes, I'll be ready.
