I'm liking this thread. I'm also in the market for a trailer but I'm looking for used. Probably go with a car/equipment trailer. I'll be hauling more logs than anything. Just don't need a big unit and don't want to spend a fortune.

One thing I learned (the hard way) is trailer tires are ALWAYS overrated.
And the letter ratings are a "range" of weights.
The manufacturer's buy the cheapest tires they can legally get away with!
Trust me, buy the next "load range" heavier !
And run the air pressure at the max!

Sorry but you can't use the words, "hauling logs and not wanting a big unit". Logs add up to a lot of weight real fast.

In WI any used trailer are generally junk due to rust. A good used one will cost virtually the same as new.

    Can't agree more.:handshake:

Truck tires are in the same boat. I buy load range "E" @ 80PSI. Believe it or not, the ride is rough.:picard:

You can air the tires down when running light so it doesn't bounce your guts out, just remember to adjust the air back up when needed:yes:

I have E load range too, but run 65 in the front and 80 in the rear. It helps.

Nah the sticker in the door says 75 & 80# for air pressure. So that's what I run, get a whole lot better mileage aired up.:rofl: :faint::rolleyes::emb::eek::wacky::hair::bug:;)

Thanks for all the replies, these are helpful. Keep me coming!! It will help me to talk about drooling over these trailers until I get my tax return to help pay for all this. Seems tandem is the universal agreement....was looking about 2k for the single, probably 3.5k for tandem and if I upgrade or add solid metal sides.... adds up fast.... I am leaning towards overbuying on capacity now as well. The wife may not be as excited.... need some good arguments... (honey, I could always help your sister move stuff, etc). She’s pretty supportive of my hobbies in all seriousness.

Figure if it’s a pain to move around the property I could always get a cheap small utility if needed or a bigger atv trailer. Better that than wanting a big trailer after buying the little one right? The tandem axle being better on grass makes sense, didn’t think about that.. thanks!!!

On the PJ trailers, some of the extras weren't much, this is from memory so don't quote me:

    Dovetail $125
    12" on center bracing $75
High metal sides with 2" rail. $225?
Extra loops for tie downs $40

    Going to 5200# axels w/electric brakes $650?

Agreed. This won't be a full-time job. Just a few logs here and there to my buddy's mill. I'll probably go new. As you said, the used ones that I'm finding are pretty beat up.

I decided on brand, and asked my local dealer to please keep an eye/ear out, and call me when a used one came in that was in good shape. He called me a week later about a beautiful condition gooseneck tilt trailer whose owner trades in every year for business tax reasons. Original price was $9,000 and it was only going to be $5250. I hightailed it down there, but due to my lifted truck height it wasn’t the right setup- I could hook up but it left a 10” drop from the front to the rear of the deck. I’ve resigned myself to having 2 trailers, a heavy duty bumper pull utility trailer and then a deck over gooseneck.

We have a holmes 6'4"x16' commercial trailer w/ 2" square tubing....wire mesh sides...split gates. We bought weight distribution bars as we pull it with a 04 Toyota 4runner w/v8. Does great!
Trailers weighs 1750......7000 gross. I know we had close to 7-8000#s on it with no ploblems. Ended up gettin a 6x8 carry on...less than a 1000.00 new n as much weight as we put on that I have no complaints either.
    Good luck in your search.

I'll visit a few dealers. I'm thinking 18 to20' car/equipment trailer. I may just have to up my budget.

The PJ trailer I posted with the solid sides are removable by bolts. So it could be used as a car/equipment hauler too. The split gate, spring assist rear gate has knee bracing so a 7,000# machine can drive over it.

Thanks. That's a real nice trailer you have. It's nice to have some general ideas. I'll hit the road today and get some general pricing. Had to get furniture before talking trailers.
