I got an older Kindle Fire - don't know which series, but mine is't ever going to substitute for a tablet. (technically can get on the internet, but even my old phone is better for that). I get my books from Amazon prime and download thru Wi-Fi. However, as someone else mentioned, you can share off your desktop thru USB connection.

Although I really prefer actual books, since I don't have room to store more than I moved in with, almost all of the books I get now are for my Kindle.

You have to buy the "without special offers" model.
You pay a little extra for no ads.
    It's worth it.

Or pay the $15 to unsubscribe to make the ads stop. ( "special offers' or whatever they call ads )

The only free lunch is a hard boiled egg w/a nickel beer.

.....you may be hard pressed to find that, these days.

So, Dennis, you have no ethernet cable from the laptop to the modem? That means it has wifi built in, so the kindle/Fire will work just fine.
We have a modem/router combo with wifi, and use it almost exclusively.

Ah, I got mine on a close out special for mine so it was much cheaper than usual and I probably didn't pay attention to that part.

I am using mine to type this, I have a bluetooth keyboard. I hardly use the laptop anymore, except for Quicken.

With a little effort, Google Play can be installed, and that leads to a lot more apps available. I use "Libby" to download and read books free from the local library.

It is a little memory challenged (mine is the cheap one), but that can be improved by adding an SD card.

My old one had a cell phone connection. I think you can still get them. Now I have the paperwhite wi-fi. It’s good in daylight and with a bedside light, but I’m not fond of reading in the dark with its own light. Too blue looking.

I bought one a long time ago, it is a 3G model, I got free books from Amazon and other places thru whisper net which is a part of Amazon. Only thing I didn't like about it was when it was dark I couldn't use it till I bought a reading light.

After 3 or 4 years and buying batteries for the readding light I got a plain Fire that is back lit. I like it a lot except for the touch screen to turn a page. Have not found a pair of heavy gloves that will work for that so when setting in my deer blind I have to be glove less on one hand. Found the old 3G model is best for the deer blind because there is a togle for turning pages.

Yes I can get free books from the library to read also thye come thru whisper net also. Problem with library books is the same as with a hard copy you can only have them so long.

All I use mine for is to read books, Kare was not crazy about how much my readding habit was costing and the piles of books I will and would not get rid of because I like to reread books every so many years.
Before I got the Kindle she would not allow me to buy any books except at the local ,ibrarys book sale in August 1.00 for hard backs and 25 cents for paper backs and tec. books varied in cost.

I have a dest top computer, lap top computer for internet usage. I have a stero set up in the work shop I picked up at the Salvation army stor for music, radio, cassette tapes and a 6 dish CD function so I get all the music I want there.

One thing I bought for the kindle is a quick charger.

I do that too. Currently into book 9 of a 10 book series (The Malazan Book of the Fallen). The first 10 books are 800-1000 pages each and the first book was published in 1999. I kept these books (and a bunch of others) when I moved because I love the series. There a whole lot of recently released books related to Malazan series, but not put out by the original author, and I will get those as Kindle editions.

    Project Gutenberg

Project Gutenberg is great place to pick up free, old books that are out of copyright (in the USA, other countries may have different laws concerning copyrights). I have gotten numerous books for my Kindle from there. It is not a site for recent books.
In regard to the above mentioned adds, interestingly, Amazon removed them from mine for free. I use my Kindle as my Bible and take it to church. One add in particular leaned toward being porn. I sent them a letter stating that it was embarrassing when that add popped up in church as well as not appreciating personally. I received a nice letter back stating the adds would be removed without charge.

We have a kindle or two in a closet around here. Replaced with ipads. The first having cellular capability, subsequent models being wifi only as we are fairly well wified with three routers. I don't use the ipads much because I find iOS a bit limiting but I'm getting used to it on my phone.
There's a bunch of ways to get legally free books to read and ways to read pdf files.
