Yeah, that looks to be elm. Elm is great stuff.​

Take all that you can. Yes, it can suck to split, but hydraulics will do it and not even complain.


If you don't have hydraulics, I don't live too far away. Just gather as much as you can and make a day of it. I hear you might have beer. Lol

I've done stupider things with less thought involved.

 

Frozen Elm will split fairly clean, but even split the grain didn't look like Elm

I agree it's great firewood...if you can split it,and you have two years to dry it.

A few years ago I took all the wood from an Elm kitty corners from me, new home owner didn't like it. Shame really, big healthy tree , trunk was over three feet in diameter. Tree service idiots left some of it in sections too big to move or cut. I felt bad leaving some of those monsters behind. Still burning some of that same wood.

 

Bark is dead on for pecan. Try burning some, if it smells like a bbq joint, its pecan.

 

We just don't have any pecan here. Not typically at least.

 

No jack daniels smell. Smells spicy kind of. But oddly enough that nicely split one in the first picture was the end of it splitting nicely. Maybe cause it was so cold that day? But today I split the entire rest of it (about a half face maybe) and it was a nightmare. Very stringy and hard to get apart. Made me angry a couple times in fact haha.

 

If it makes you angry it's likely Elm.

I wonder about Kentucky Coffee Tree. Looks close and it is in Wisconsin. Rare tree overall.

 

I actually thought the KCT was endangered or protected or something of the sort. Thought I remember seeing that somewhere.

 

It is an uncommon tree and always has been I guess. Does look like it though. It is planted pretty regularly as it is a tough tree.

 

After I saw your second set of pics, I vote pizz elm.

haha, yeah I do have hydraulics, thankfully. But yes I do have lots of beer around usually. Especially since I don't drink much anymore. Come on by for some beer and wood splitting anytime.

Really?! I used to live in Hartland. Where do you work there? My dad still lives in Hartland. Right by the Walgreens there off of Merton Ave. Hop skip and a jump from ole Village of Summit.

Lol no it is not pizz elm OR Kentucky Coffee Tree and the only reason I'm certain of that is because I have a bunch of each in my stacks.

Exhibit A - pizz elm. My lot is lined with them. A bark pic would convince you but I don't have a good one. It's pretty rough and deep furrowed bark.




Exhibit B - coffee wood. Scrounged this from a wood worker last spring who really had to convince me this wasn't honey locust. Said he researched his tree extensively and seemed positive it was KC. One good indicator is since I've had it split, there have been no little bugs burrowing into it, as where every piece of honey locust I have does. Even in the same stacks as the coffee wood.

 

I'll admit it though you have me second guessing the possibility of pizz elm...ill take pics later of the bark on mine.
