This has been along time coming. I found a good deal on a used dump trailer and picked it up today. 12 ft and 12k lbs gross weight. I might get wild and crazy and put a tool box in my truck someday. Valuable space was always a concern for me. Now I can load the trailer and keep my gear in the truck bed.
Yeah nice used dumps (read: not rusted out) are hard to find...especially at a good price! I looked for years before finding my lil aluminum 10x7...a bit on the small side, but it does the job very well and is still super handy!
Nice! I rent my buddies (for a case of beer) once in awhile. Very nice to just put gear in the back of the truck instead of loading 3 saws and other stuff in the back seat. Figured I could haul around 2 cordes and pull without a problem with my 1/2 ton.
How far south I made need to borrow it this weekend.................nice clean used ones are hard to find and usually if you do they are the same pricee as new
gross trailer weight to heavy for 1/2 ton truck weight rating. IF something was to happen you could be up the river without a paddle for being overloaded. Also some DOT jurisdictions go out of their way to fine those that are over loaded. Get pulled over, get weighed, get lots of expensive tickets. With Govt money so tight you will see more of this to generate revenue. DOT is on a roll lately
2 cords of wood= 8,000 trailer= 3500 gross weight 11,500 There are 1/2 tons that can tow 13k now. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
The trailer specifications list it as 3600lbs. I’m going to weigh it with the side boards on and the battery attached. If it comes in at 4000lbs then I have 8k to load. I would stack my truck to get the most wood loaded in limited space, with the 12x7 trailer with 3ft sides I’ll probably just toss wood in the trailer.
It would be fun to load a cord in the bed and two in the trailer. I would like to find out how the truck handles the load.
only for discussion not arguing the point, The weight that is considered is the manufacturers rated weight so as stated in the first post it is 12k, yes still less than 13k, again just for your info. Also do not forget your truck must be registered for that weight also, might vary by state.
And don't forget tire weight rating And axle weight rating . You can be under GCWR and over on a couple axles and tires. And some states have bridge laws where length of vehicle is formulated into legal weight limits. Just because the door plate says xxxxxxxx lbs doesn't mean it's legal. It's far more complex than gross weight.
I would love to find a used dump trailer-but haven't seen a one that wasn't beat to heck! That was a great find.
