I was wondering if rope bought from someplace like Baileys comes already whipped? If not, how do they secure the ends of the rope? I am looking at some of the New England rope.

Don't think it does. Some places will do it for a charge. But you can do it by yourself too.

I just bought 150' of rigging rope and the ends were heat fused. I don't know if they will remain that way or if I'll have to whip them, I'm looking into it.

I'm new to rigging with rope, I had to purchase it because of a number of dead ash on my place that are close to the neighbors fence line. Rope, cheaper than replacing fence.

I get vey strong nylon rope from work. I use heat shrink at the ends. It works great then burn the end.

My Wallenstein Log Trailer has the option for a boom mounted hydraulic winch, but I was disappointed when it came with a synthetic rope. I have not had good experiences with rope and logging, but obviously have with cable.

Long term I would think cable would be a better investment, and no scary things to go wrong like rope and stretch.

You can whip the ends with whipping thread or tooth floss and a needle, or, plain old-fashioned electrical type and a lighter. I prefer the latter, fast, easy, cheap, reliable.

I put the heat shrink rope ends from McMaster Carr on mine, has a heat activated adhesive inside. however I still sewed it up first as old habits die hard as they say.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am thing of getting a Maasdam rope puller and it calls for a half inch rope. Having never bought rope from a place like Baileys, I didn't know how the ends were treated to prevent unraveling.

I remember reading somewhere that the strand count makes a difference with that puller so maybe you want to check on that if you haven't already. I bought a 5/8" rope from Bailey's and the ends only had a few wraps of tape on the ends.

1/2” 3strand is the stuff. Other 1/2” like a 12 strand or something will work, but not as well as far as the ends electrical tape isn’t bad or hot knife/ torching them works depending on the rope material. You can get the puller or a whole kit here even comes with a choker sling! TreeStuff - Maasdam Rope Puller Kit

I already have 150' that I just purchased a couple of weeks ago. I have a throwing line and weight and a rope bag as well. So when the puller gets I'll have all I'll ever need, except for someone to pay me to work!:D
