One of the big reasons I very rarely watch tv or listen to the radio is because so much time is taken with advertising. If I want to be entertained, it is not with some business trying to sell something.

Yet, the ultimate seems to be Super Bowl advertising. It even makes headlines on the national news!!! I never dreamed we'd see such things as this.

Not only that, but just out of curiosity, recently I took some time and watched a few ads....with the sound off. Then tried to guess what they were trying to sell. Very rarely, if they did not show the sponsor's name could you tell what they were trying to sell. All they are doing is trying to tell some story and I guess you are supposed to figure if you buy their product you will be in that scene. Stupid, methinks.

So, how much money is spent on this crazy stuff they call advertising? And do they really get their money back? Yes, they get a break on taxes for advertising but it is difficult for me to believe they ever get full return on that money spent.

But, maybe I'm just old-fashioned. I don't need to watch an ad to know what I want to buy and I am not the least bit entertained by watching an advertisement. Last night got to be really boring with all the breaks for ads and it really takes something away from what you are trying to watch.

One more thing that I don't get. An injury, so time out for an ad. Next play, a touchdown, so a time out while they decide if it was or was not indeed a touchdown so more ads. Kick extra point then break for commercials. Kick off and break again for commercials. How many do they really need?! So, this is why I rarely even turn the tv on.

Am I alone on this? Okay, rant over.

No, Backwoods Savage, you are definitely not alone. I've grown to hate most TV advertising, but then I hardly ever watch TV anymore. Like you, I know what I need and want, and I don't need ads to figure that out. :dex:

    You’re not alone Dennis.
They make their $ back... otherwise would the Stock Market be above 25,000?
Although we’ve got a nice customer loyalty package price locked in on satellite tv, the only reason I keep it is the DVR- pause for a minute then FF to the action or record the thing and watch later... avoiding commercials is my way of thumbing my nose at them....

I was sitting in the basement in front of the wood stove last night, playing on my laptop as usual. Surfing FHC.
I thought..., I could probably live stream the game.... Quick search and it was playing live, already a couple scores on both sides. This was the only football I watched this year,... But I had nothing to do this evening, it was dark and the evening service was cancelled due to snow, so I did watch some of the game.

It's been about 2 years since I cancelled the cable and unplugged the tv.
    Life is much better!

    Agreed.
Not even Cindy Crawford  could get me to buy Pepsi. Michael Jackson didn't stand a chance.

That is why I like to record programs and then I can FF through the commercials especially if you get the same one twice in a row.

I like the commercials where EX; COKE VS PEPSI, Coke pays for the spot, compares itself to Pepsi and Pepsi get as much airtime as Coke and the avg consumer does not even know who the commercial was for.

Between my habit of automatically fast forwarding through commercials and WWW's habit of automatically tuning out in his mind, we missed at least 1/2 of them. Oh well.

I did catch a fast food commercial last night, can't tell you if it was for Wendy's or McDonalds.

    Facts that explain a lot:
    1. Advertisers of certain consumer goods know that the brand you choose as a youth will usually stay with you for life. E.g. the tobacco you used as a teen or young military recruit is the brand you stick with. Same with beer and other foods. So, advertisers target the young.
    2. About 85% of money spending decisions are made by women. (Both old and young)
    3. TV/media is largely paid for by these ads.

Thus, almost all TV shows are targeted at 14 year old girls. Those that are traditionally not in that demographic, (perhaps football), know that if they work their way into it, they get more money over the long haul.
Think about all that for a while, and you'll notice a pattern emerging.

BTW, some of that is pointed out to me by some former 14 y.o. girls. (very former, heh)

Back in 2000 or so when the government decided we poor white Deplorables didn't need free TV anymore and changed how TV was done, my wife and I said, nah, we don't think we'll go along with that. We haven't missed television, or the commercials, one bit.

Not sure about that as we've basically been away from tv before 2000. But I remember when I was at a convention back in the 70's and we had hired an ad company to work up a tv commercial for us (they did and it was awful). He gave a long spiel about how commercials were changing (and they did) and going to very short commercials. That meant you would see many commercials during breaks rather than just a couple. Wow, did that ever change things and make things worse. Not only more with each break but more time was given to play even more commercials.

btw, it was because of this change to shorter commercials and no cut in price along with the fact nobody liked what they came up with, we cancelled on the tv commercials. Never did run any from what I remember.

Youtube is annoying having advertisements before watching a video. I'll watch the short ones, the half minute ones, forget it. They also put ads in the middle of longer videos.

Some of the tv commercials are just beyond me in quality. I am pretty certain I am not their target audience.

Dennis, you seem to have missed the point. Most Superbowl commercials in the last 5 or 6 years are supposed to be funny. It's a large part of why I watch the game, especially since the NFL started allowing players to take a knee during the anthem.
For the $ these companies pay for a 30 sec ad during the super bowl, it doesn't make sense that they'd do it to attempt to make a profit from it
