You have folks that don't prepare any where you go. Theres also folks that live pay check to pay check and just have the means to get ahead. I am very fortunate to live in a area that has unmeasureable amount of fire killed wood. You just have to get it. While that sounds easy you need some things to harvest. The effort is what makes or breaks. A saw, pickup and all the elbow grease you can muster, with get you there. I run through a lot of wood, my 15-20 cords of softwood, by weight most likely will would come out to 8-10 cords of hardwood. Its all relative, I suppose.

There were lots of folk that I heard about that had frozen pipe over the last week. Most folks don't want to pay the .44 cents a kilowatt to make sure that the pump house and pipe don't freeze. Then go off and spend more money to fix the frozen, some never learn. Basements are rare here. I am one of less than 10 houses that have them. I am fortunate that my builder put the well in the basement. I don't have any problems thanks to his experience.

The great lakes, not really, the bays and such yes.

Big lakes though, yeah. They've all been well frozen over. There's well over 20" of ice and guys are driving trucks on them.

We've got an ice hockey 4 on 4 tournament in Eagle River http://eagleriver.org/featured/pond-hockey-championships/

Still burning elm here. 27° . I was burning cherry the last number of days.

Yes, it's ok for PEX, just remember to use grounded heat tape as the PEX won't act as a ground because it's plastic.

Rope that's interesting, my well is outside but comes into house under 8 foot basement wall so I never have had pipes freeze. How low does your frost line go? Ours is usually 5 feet is safe

We have permafrost, if I remember around 2200 feet. The problem they have is the tank is outside above ground in a little shack that is not heated. Some use lights, some heat tape, if anything is exposed, it freezes at -30* or colder. If any work was done and not buttoned up correctly.

-22°F , -30° C (Trudeau Math) here. Wind's about 12 - 14 mph at the nearest weather stations, Regina, Yorkton, Indian Head triangle. Burning mostly poplar with some DED elm and windblown Manitoba Maple in the old Enterprise cookstove, which needs help from the oil furnace at these temperatures.

    -41. Poplar still.
I had to shovel off the roof of the livi g room addition this past week. I banked this room with the snow from the roof. I've never banked this addition before.
Very stupid of me. It feels like it's25-30 below outside in comparison to un banked. Amazing. We r also burning much less wood for the same amount of heat, or interior temperature.

I'd bet that still made many kids happy...in the winter month. Just the opposite in the summer though. When you play, you have to pay!

In northern MI it is very common for farmers to use tractors to bank snow around the houses every winter. Yes, we did it too and it helps.

11° now. Burning elm and ironwood uglies. It's still snowing. We must have at least 4-6" already. I'll snow blow the driveway after lunch, but before the game after it stops.

I have to bring a couple of tubs of wood in too.

Pellet stove is cold right now- had both running on Friday tho, it was pretty chilly (for here) that night.
