I'm still waiting on the probe thermo, so until it gets here, I don't know what the pipe is doing.
Which is one of the reasons I haven't cranked the stove much.
    I hate driving w/o gauges.

Cracking the door open too far starting a fire will do that too, Oh yeah and dialing it down to soon will too

I hope that was the inside.:p
Put a few small splits in at 11:15, and I now have ghost flames dancing around inside the box, mostly above what's left of the wood.
Not the first time, but it's still cool to watch.
Would someone with the 30 on legs get an up close and personal pic of those for me?

You won't gain a lot of draw, but it might help....
I didn't think about that; If you've got the air open when you're establishing the load, the air coming in the doghouse would probably blow the ash out of the way. I seem to remember some posts about guys partially blocking the doghouse on the 30, but can't remember the particulars. Ashes will work on the Buck if I've got the boost air slider shut....

Yep, there are 2 small holes underneath, behind the front legs that feed the "boost"/"doghouse" air. Each about the size of a dime or so.
Brother Bart (pretty sure it was him) used magnets to cover those holes to either slow that air or shut it down.
It acts like a forge right down the middle of the wood front to back and never stops.
I understand the need at the start of a fire...maybe, but it seems a bit much after a few minutes. I think it burns the wood too fast.
I'm going to the store in a few minutes to see if I can find a couple of those small magnets. Easily removed if it messes things up.
After that, I may also try the 2ndary partial blockoff. I haven't had much in the way of a huge fire yet, so that can wait.

Just went through the manual again and it says to open the air, then slowly open the door when re-fueling.
I'll do what works, as long as it's safe.

I think he used a bolt on the doghouse air and magnets on the secondary air. IIRC the 30 was designed to be a E/W burner and the doghouse air really helps get air get to the back of the firebox to fully burn those splits when burning that way.

Keep playing with it you'll get it dialed in. I'm on the 3rd season with the Manny and I'm still getting better with her. I can't believe after this winter it looks like I'll have burn about the same amount of wood as the last.

I suppose I could put a bolt in the doghouse hole inside the stove.

    Oops.
    Must not have happened.
Just took this. Not quite full load of Maple for the night.
Primary almost 100% shut, and I put foil tape over about 1/3 of the secondary hole this afternoon.
Partially covered the doghouse holes as well.

Got that fire going just before 11:00.
All I'm seeing right now are rolling flames above the wood near the tubes.
I may open the air a bit before bed.
I know this is only day 2, but this stove just gets easier to use....
Weather has been low to mid 30's since I got it. We're due for 11° tomorrow night, so we'll see how it does then. I'll load it up about an hour before bed.

This thing seems way more controllable than I thought it would be. I haven't even pushed it yet and it's been doing great.
Mostly pine and Maple so far, with a small load of Oak for one fire.
Coming up on an hour, and it's still in 2ndary mode. Most of the load isn't even charred yet. Looks like I just loaded it.
    Stove is at 480°.
