Craigslist saw market is picking up for the season.

My CL searches have been pretty quiet since before Christmas, but I'm starting to see some good deals now that the weather is warming up (50F today, yippee!).

Last week I picked up a low-mileage early 036. The guy I got it from had some little problem and took the throttle & choke linkages apart, put them back together wrong and managed to break the plastic on/off/choke lever. Then he left gas in it for a year which softened up the fuel line. His wife got on his case to clean out the garage, so he put the saw up for sale and I got there first. I gave it a bath this morning and figured out what it needed. I expect it will be a very nice saw about an hour after the parts arrive.

Unsurprisingly, finding a good one only whets the appetite. I'm already looking for the next...

 

I've not found much on craigslist local to me. The only thing was the alaskan mill set up and he was an AS member that was local.

 

Huh, I saw an Alaskan mill set on CL a week or so ago. Even came with a (big, heavy, ancient) saw, bar and chain for $250. I was tempted.

Nice saw man. I hear ya about craigslist, it's picked up in the last week actually. I don't need another saw, but can't help but look. I do know of a decent 460 for $400, tho... tempting!

 

I have not seen more than a few deals. They are picking up though. Everything is an hour and a half from me. And the prices I have seen have not been worth the drive. I mean if I was within a half hour or near id bought half of what I see and not haggle.

 

I have this idea that eventually I'll have only 3 saws (or even, *gasp*, 2!) that I'll regard as mine and keep for a long time. At this point I seem to have a continuous (if slow) stream of neglected saws that I'm buying, cleaning, fixing and letting go. My wife compares it to a doll hospital. She's not wrong. I just hate to see nice machines go to waste for lack of a little attention.

 

Yeah are you going to sell it if so when ?

 

I would guess pretty soon, once the parts get here. I'll have to find a hunk of wood to cut so I can make a video...

 

I just Tex Ted a guy on a used ms290. He wants $400. I told him if I can get a 290 on the shelf still there that price new!! He told me there $650 new at his dealer. I said the 291 is $450 and sent a screen capture to him...I dont know where some folks get this stuff??

 

I think some people imagine all Stihls are the same. The price depends on the bar length, not the model number.

 

Yea a guy was trying to sell his landscape stuff. He lists a 560 stihl? I'm like maybe I van catch a deal here??? Text the guy and say are u sure its not a 460?? He says no 560.I say they never made a 560?? They made a 056 and 056 super but that was like 20+ years ago maybe?? He said no this is like a year and a half. Also said he wwanted $300 for it and that it was a big bit saw 21" bar?? More confused but think maybe its a 650. I said is it a 650 cause I'll take it if so, and ask if its a stihl bar cause they dont make a 21" bar just 20/25". He said I'll have to look cause u know more than me . He says all I know isthat iI paid $600 for it. I was like maybe a 360?? Turns out it was a 261!!!! Good deal but did not want to drive across the state for it at that price. Some of you guys will beat me over the head on that one I bet.

 

Not much here lately.The usual newish plastic Poulan's,small Husky or Stihl,rare occasions there'll be an Echo for sale.Only rarely do I see a big pro saw of any make.

Course what I'm watching for is older Mac's mostly.A couple mid sized models from late '60's to mid '70's have been listed for a month at least. Barn finds I'm guessing,they look good & are a fair price.

Only thing is they're a good 50-75 miles one way from me,even a cheap saw price with the price of gas its about the same or less to wait for same saw in another state on Ebay. Plus 2-3 hrs travel time that could be spent doing other stuff.....

Another ad has a rebuilt 660 for $700. Harry Homeowner wouldn't know what to do with that beast....
Plus a very nice 044 about 45 miles east of me for $600.

The thing is, 2 years ago the only saw I owned was Husky 137 that I'd bought because I didn't know any better, and I developed a case of chainsaw envy as I read about better models that I couldn't afford. Now I've gotten to play with some really nice saws and am practically swimming in a small collection, but I still cling to the idea that one good saw should be enough because that's all I thought I wanted when I started acquiring them.
