    I was surprised that the fireplaces actually looked functional. There was even kindeling between the splits. Anybody know if they are actually used.

    Can you imagine the wood they had to burn back in the day to keep that place warm!

    You know why old houses have so many fireplaces don't ya? They only had fires in the rooms they were using - not heating the entire house at one time. You were lucky if your bedroom was upstairs and close to the brick/stone chimney.

    Is one of them in the state room? I swear I remember pictures on the news with the various Presidents at state dinners with that in the background, but I may be hallucinating too.

    Fun fact: Monticello (Jeffersons residence) burned through 10 cord of wood per month for heat!

    I wouldnt doubt the White House used a similar amount back when that was its primary heat source.
