I understand your point Larry it’s good advice there’s work no matter what you buy. I think it be nice to work with newer material is all. Tree trunk rafters and beams are a pain! That sorta thing. Chalk it up to me being frustrated lately.

While working in the attic I discovered four split ceiling Joists all made of rough lumber. That’s why I purchased the nail gun now we have to support the roof and replace joists. Ring shank nails are insanely strong and almost impossible to get out later so I’ll probably be pizzed when / if we decide to do something later and they are in the way.

That’s pretty much what I have been doing for materials too. Spend more now and I won’t have to do it again later!

Our bathroom budget is $4000 as of now I’m hoping to get up to $5000 before we start. Hopefully it will be cheaper because I’m doing it but with prices now I think we will be lucky to come in under 4K....

I love looking at those old papers, especially the ads. Its interesting seeing what was on sale and the prices...the wording can be funny too. I found some in our attic, not quite that old though...

I am in need of a little guidance here I’m considering reinforcing the roof with perlins and supports down to the joists but am afraid to because the length and size of the floor / ceiling joists.

Does anybody know the weight rating per length of a 2*6”.

If I support the roof but the floor can’t handle it I’m opening a huge can of worms I think......

    so from your description I am reading the roof rafters and the floor/ceiling joists do not line up???? A couple of options;
    collar ties instead of verticals
add a beam of 3 2x6's on top of joists to distribute load
add blocking between existing joists to stiffen
the load from the verticals is actually going to be minimal because the roof load is carried to the outside walls, I would add collar ties to prevent spreading and call it good. Is there noticeable movement?

or is it swayback visible from the outside, that would require an entirely different approach.
    ^^^^^^^ sagging in the center?

The roof has a noticeable sag to it in the middle. That’s been there since the roof was re done 12 years ago. No the joists do not line up at all.

When you say 3 2*6 do you mean stacked and laid over the joists?

I am going to speak up because if Pete's in the middle of this project nothing is more frustrating than having to wait.

Pete, collar ties up here on the picture of your rafters where they come together at the peak. Come down about 18 in or whatever height is comfortable. So probably either above or below your wiring with lights. A collar tie is that a 2 by 6, with an angle on each end too match your roof pitch. Show the three two by sixes would be one on each side and one in the middle of your rafters.

i think, like you would build a beam in the basement to hold up the floor joists.

    Questions
1 is your attic completely uninsulated.
2 are there any support walls underneath the attic floor joists
