When ever I have too much draft do to a strong wind from the south my flue temps rise about as fast as the speedometer on my car and I have to watch the stove like a hawk, do you know if your stove is acting any thing like that?

Woodstock Soapstone added our damper while we were helping test their stoves, and it has been a great addition. Prior to it, we could bring the PH up to and level off at cruising temp, but no matter the temp we leveled off at we could not bring the temp back done until the load was past it’s peak. Now, with the flue damper, we have much more control, and we see no downside to having it.

I'll be putting in a damper next week and will report on the results. Thanks all for the help.

I had a Quad 4300 and controlling the burn was very difficult, especially on bitterly cold days when there was extra-strong chimney draft. I took the sides off the stove and found that even when the primary and secondary air intakes were "closed", there was still a huge gap. Something to do with EPA regs or whatnot. I cut some aluminum strips to completely cover the gaps and pop-riveted them in place. The stove was perfectly controllable after that. Perhaps the original poster has a similar issue on his stove, although I can't recommend that anyone modify their stove as I did.
