Iv gotten alot of wood through asplundh, so many people dont want it, i also knock on doors where they have previously worked, i actually have spots to get to where theyve been and just tryin to make time to go get it. I have six acres of my own also that iv taken alot down to clear for a big gardening project. Heres a pic where iv cleared everything on one side of my river for the growing. This is from the road looking down. Its a slow process, im just a guy and a wheelbarrow and husqvarna lawn tractor w/trailer. Need a quad bad hopefully this year.
I know a guy on a takedown truck out of fitchburg mass, i used to work with him and i see him in townsend alot. I dont really go through them since theres wood all over the place. Knocking on doors where the wood is, thats where i have the most success. I had a neighbor down the rd just give me like 2-3 grapple loads of woodin fall , i just asked if we could work something out cuz i needed money and that stuff was ready to burn since its been sitting for 4 years, he wasnt doing anything with it. He said just take it its yours. 6cords sold already, god knows how much is left, 20?? I will also ask people about deadfall close to the road. What i do is Probably nothing new to anyone here, i got it just as bad. I am addicted! I spent alot of time in Nashua when i was there so theres probably not much going on there lately, theres a ton of work up by weare, like i said to mwalsh9152, “watch the orange flagged trees under the lines, those are takedowns”. I mostly get wood from the Nashua dump, which is pretty well stocked in warmer weather. I got a lot of skinny oak poles that were cut under power lines and left by the side of the road. Mostly I just drool over big chunks left by Asplundh, too big for me to muscle into my SUV. I got my first chainsaw last summer, so I'll be more enterprising this summer.
Nice, best advice i ever got was to always wrap your hand completely around the top handle, alot of people dont wrap their thumb, and always keep your left elbow locked. If theres a kickback with your elbow bent the saw can come rt back to ya, less chance with elbow locked.
Thanks! I'm learning. Right now I'm most comfortable cutting wood on a sawbuck, but I have cut piles stacked lengthways on the ground. My husband is a good teacher too.
Thats great, my wife is a big help with the clearing of the land, no chainsaw work though. She builds a hell of a burnpile, mostly motivated by the opportunity to have a few cocktails by it.
No burnpiles in Nashua! I save every little chip anyway. In Mason you're living large! We used to rent a chainsaw from HD or Taylor Rental, but that meant cutting everything at once, and my husband got sick of that. It's a lot more fun now to cut as I go.
No burn piles here either. You have to get a permit and the fire department can come out and make sure the day before to see that you're not doing something stupid. Not supposed to burn leaves but people do. As long as a neighbor doesn't get on the phone and complain .... You can only get a permit for certain times of the year too. Next town over you even have to have a permit for a chiminea. Not that everyone does, but if a neighbor complains if you don't have a permit they can tell you to stop. Sounds nuts but there are some rather stupid people out there. I've got enough property I can drag unwanteds into the woods to let them decompose with time. A neighbor or two with postage stamp sized lots too. As long as you don't make piles it disappears pretty quick.
I never realized how lucky we are here. Nobody cares, hardly any interference from the county and the neighbors are too far away. Hope that never changes.
Got into this tree a little, only had an hour. For being a hard maple and 22 inch logs it split so nice. I did it by hand for a little workout. Tomorrow ‘s gonna be 50, maybe the boss will let me play more.
