    That grinder looks slow?

The device or the operator? I think they work at about the same speed.

Just watched to video-- a lot of why he was going slow was because he was just starting and trying to set depth and because he was showing me how it works. The process does seem to be tedious, but it does look like it will be more precise.

Haha. No was talking about grinder. And I know y'all were setting it up as well. Seems that lock knob is slow. I like mine with the bike style brake to lock the chain in place. I have the hF model.

Oh, that would be nice. I won't tell him about it though, don't want to ruin his honeymoon period with it.

I was looking at 'em in Baileys. They have ones several hundred bucks. What do you look for in these? I want one someday.

I hope someone can answer that, as far as I know it was bought on a whim.

I bought the one from HF. Its $30 on sale. It by no means is a precision grinder compared to one a shop may have. But if your slow and repeditive and repeat your actions each time you can sharpen chain 10x better than most hand filers. I thought I was pretty decent with a file but this thing shows you how off on ur angles you are as well as how dull u were. Its a good model for most o us . Northern tool has some in the $150 range but not sure if there 5x as good as the Hf model?

Those really expensive ones would be good for a shop that's does hundreds of chains. Replaceable parts and precision specs. As well as those that want every cutter exactly the same.

I bought one of the really expensive grinders. Oregon 511AX. Boy was it worth it to me. I only sharpen 15 or 20 chains a week, but they go quick & get sharp. The small Oregon grinder is plenty for most people, & gives decent results. I like having the fully adjustable angles for custom grinds. A C

    2 things Jack.

1.- He is taking off WAY TO MUCH material. There should only be a few light sparks if sharpening a good chain.

2.- He is moving the chain backwards. The way that grinder works, is to just pull the chain forward. You never have to flip that chain stop up. Just advance forward, then back it up till tight. It will save him LOTS of time.

As much as he took off the, he will likely only get about 4-5 sharpening before that chain is scrap. And don't forget that removing that much cutter? Means removing that much raker?

I think I'll get a sharpener and bring it to the Ohio meetup. Maybe we can get a demonstration for how to use it properly. Now...which one to get????

Dexter-- thanks for the tips about him pulling the chain the wrong way. That was a severely messed up chain that we were close to tossing, that why that was the first one in. I think he went to the worst link first and then ground the rest to match. I will let him know about both, though. Thanks.

A mucked up chain will throw some sparks, but his advance of the chain is backwards. I never shut off my grinder. Just unlock, pull forward, lock, grind, unlock.. Repeat

Yep, I think we got it all figured out. Talked to him about advancing the chain and how it should only spark a little. Whether he was correcting the angle or not, he knows now and he was able to save face.
