A tree service started on two big leaf maples in my front yard today. These trees drop more and more dead branches every year and I thought it best to have them removed before a branch finds my head while I'm mowing the lawn.
They were about as big as big leaf maples get. The tree guys got most of it done today and will be back tomorrow to bring down the last 30ft or so of each tree. I think this kind of work requires a combination of crazy and brass balls.
Lots of splitting and stacking in my future. I'll add more pics when it's all done.

Once ya learn what your doin up in a tree, it's not bad.
It Is about the hardest work known to man tho. Climbing is the hardest work I've ever done.

Last sentence should read compare to sugar maple or rock maple.

A guy would think they would make a fon that wasn't an embarrassment.

We don't have those maples around here. BTU charts say it's lower than them and about equal to silver maple if that helps. Big leaf, Douglas fir, and white birch are about the highest BTU stuff I regularly have access to (17-20mBTU).

Be worth it to peel bark and check for figure. Sometimes big leaf can give a quilted figure and it'd be a crying shame to burn it all.

Still a lot of wood on the stump. There's a third maple in the background on a neighbor's property that's also being removed. They're taking down a total of 11 trees on 4 properties.
I was just adding a little gripe to this post about their troubles maintaining a schedule, and I heard their truck. So I deleted the part about them failing to show up again. 20180124_113353.jpg 20180124_113315.jpg

Some climbers are like a monkey in a tree.
    Me, more like a gorilla.

That's another twist. I didn't know it until he showed up and talked to me over the weekend, but there's a custom guitar maker down the road. He checked the trunks and wants to buy some once it's all down.

Stihls and one Husky. They must've had a half dozen from small top handle models to one big daddy. The only one I saw the model # on was a 261.

If figured, it fetches a very lofty price. Heck of a wood score!

If I had trees like that around here. I would mill them to make flooring and wainscoting. And of course firewood.

I think a big leaf maple what we call a striped maple. I have never seen one that big. Gramps on the farm always called it Whistlewood. Because it was smaller dense and it made good recorders or flutes

I can't even think about climbing a tree without feeling stressed. You are very smart to have those trees taken down before they fall down on you or someone else. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

You may want to check with the local gunsmith or stock maker as well. There is money in the specialty wood market.

Maple is my favorite gun wood... Nice lite color versus the dark cherry or walnut on the vast majority of stocks.
