So if you could get a HUGE load of a very big 40"+ Cedar, would you take it? Do you guys normally burn Cedar? I have in the past and it seemed to burn HOT and FAST, is that the norm for cedar since it's so light?

Now for why the question. My yard is completely full of wood. I mean COMPLETELY. I have a very small yeard, surrounded by woods and/or water/swampy wetlands. So I have very little property, and most of it is covered with 6' to 8' high stacks of split wood. Last weekend I brought home 3 trucks loads of rounds, which I dumped right in the middle of my yard, the only open grassy spot left, I still need to process that, and don't know where I'm going to stack it.

So this morning on the way to work, I pass a "Tree Service" truck a block down from my house sawing up tree and loading it into large dump truck, and shredding the branches. So I slow down and roll down the window and in my sickness, ask: "Hey, do you want that wood? I could use it for firewood!". He says "Where is your house?" I tell him and he says "where would you like it dumped?" Stupidly, I say right on the driveway, and he says sure, no problem, saves me a trip to the dump. I thank him and off I go.

So then I look in the rearview mirror and get a good luck of what is in the truck, and see it looks like Cear, and VERY large cedar at that, and ALOT of it. As I'm pulling into my office, 25 minutes later my wife calls "DID YOU ORDER WOOD TO BE DUMPED?"

    aahhh ohhhh!!

Well, they dumped it alright. And I haven't seen it yet, but apparently more than I bargained for!

I burned it las year, liked it ok but it was a mild winter. Could always make planks out of it and sell it to fancy restaurants.

Before you do anything with it you should shoot some video, I would love to have that in my archive for future FHC-TV projects!

Give some away to campgrounds! The campers love it and it smells nice. It's good shoulder wood "BUT" make sure it's very dry and seasoned. The last batch of cedar I had was perfect for chilly nights, and your right, it burns "hot" and fast.... call up the boy scouts, they'll take some too. My wife takes a bowl and filles it full of noodles/shavings and puts them in the closet and bathrooms, makes them smell nice...

You need to start dividing up rooms of the house now.
Seeing as you'll be sleeping in the dog house you may as well stack wood in your half.

You could always take up golfing with a shrink and try to convince the wife you're getting help.

Oh and cedar is like white pine. Burns hot and fast. So at least by this time next year you might be able to watch TV.

    Likely this cedar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamaecyparis_thyoides

I think red cedar is pretty dense, white cedar is lighter. I'd have to check the BTU charts. I would probably burn it, shoulder season. I use old white cedar fence posts and rails to for kindling and starting the pizza oven. Lots of popping sparks though.

Here is the result of squaring a chunck of red cedar. It will make the neighbors wonder what you are up to.

If it's still long, you could make split rail fencing out of it.

It will burn fine. Is light weight so you can throw it on top if need be. Not sure how it will work in a dog house.

Any carvers in the area? Can you make some benches or stools?

fishingpol, what are we looking at in that pic? Can't figure out what you mena "Squaring a chunk..." ?

FYI, got home last night, and bucked and split it all. Started at 6 and finished at 9:30. It is very Red Cedar, almost bright pink when split open, cool looking wood. The pile wasn't as bad as the wife described to me. Only 2 pieces that were 40", and they were 6' long so only required two cuts each. The rest was all under 30", much of it 15 or 20". Got a bit more than 1/2 cord out of it.

    GIMME DA WOOOD!

I just turned a heap of white cedar into kindling the other day....around a half pickup loads worth.

Spent an hour at the splitter making 1" thick slabs, I'll stack them in the loft of the barn and that'll be my kindling for the next two or three seasons. I also save my splitter trash (slivers left over from the splitting process) in boxes and store them in the barn loft as well. Temps in the loft get well up into the 100° + range in summer, dries that stuff out really fast.

Nice score, Machria. I love the smell of cedar!

Yep, I don' see no steenkin' Red Cedar.
Sounds like a nice bunch of wood though.
    Half cord....wow, that's a nice haul.
I'd turn it into kindling and SS wood.
    YMMV
