I went out to the wood lot today. My buddy came out and helped cut as well. The first tree is a dead elm I fell last winter and out got hung up. Mother nature put it down exactly where I wanted it. Stacked elm. I'll get this later. When there's more snow to be able to haul better. After that, the maple tree that the wind blew on to my back cut last March. Ma nature threw a gust the right way and it went exactly where I wanted it to go. The other angle... That tree is decent sized. There's a little spalting to it, but it will dry and burn just fine. There's this burl in the trunk. Not certain what to do with it. Figured if I cut it, then it's just firewood. Then another big sugar maple branch. I might get the rest of this later. The rest is in the neighbor's lot. My buddy stopped by with his ms460 and he helped cut as well, mostly in a few dead and downed ironwood and hickory. The big hickory that fell, was unfortunately hollow. There's still good wood in it, as the outsides were solid, as well as a lot of the top. I'll get that when the snow returns. It will be much easier then. While he cut, I hauled. A few loads were way too back heavy. I safely got them all to the trailer. This first pic is the maple "branch" lol The ATV got a gusher of a fuel leak by the carb. I barely got it out of the woods on the last load. I think the fuel line split. Also an AV rubber went on my buddy's ms460. So we broke enough yesterday and I was content with all that we cut and as much as I hauled. I unloaded the wood at my buddy's for splitting at a later date. More on the next post...
More pictures from yesterday.. I had to stack a little less than the first few loads. It was too slow going to haul with no weight on the front. The final result Probably a heavy half cord. There's still plenty to do in the woods. We just were concentrating on trees in the ground. Next after hauling the rest of what we cut, is working on dead standers and ones that need to be culled.. There's a crooked live sugar maple that is just asking to be dropped and made into firewood.
The stock trilink chain is getting dull. It needs a sharpening, but I'll probably just put on a sharpened loop of LGX full chisel I have. I've only run the dolkita with this trilink chain that came with it when I bought the saw last March. I know the trilink is very conservative as it's made to not kickback since this is what they sent on the saw to those that rent from HD. So, this 6421 will get even better with real chain on it. I'll reserve this chain after a sharpening to be used for trees with probable metal in them. What's funny is that when my buddy and I were cutting by eachother, he mentioned how loud my dolkita is. Yes, it's louder than his stock ms460. My dolkita even still has the catalytic converter in it. So, eventually when I gut the muffler, it's going to be even louder.
Looks like some good work got done this morning. How's the sugar maple supply out there? Ever think of setting up a syrup operation? Seems like everybody over here has a little sugar setup working.
Look like some good BTU's Horkn Hope it an easy fix on the ATV. I worked on the pile that was delivered last Fall What a great day!
Ah, sugar maple syrup, there's a lot here, with a lot of good sized trees. I grew up on that land, well from 7 to college age at least. The lot was divided into 3 lots. The lot with the house we sold. We used to make maple syrup and we could collect a ton of sap.
You'd have loved the wheelies I pulled with said wood-pyramid stacks. All the shag and ironwood were "sticks" that I stacked on the rack in line with the rear axle. Normally I use the sled to tow behind. But the snow melted. I can tow more, and quicker and easier with the sled behind the ATV.
