Went on a hiking/backpacking trip over the weekend. Was outside of State College, Pa. Got to see some old growth eastern hemlocks. Pretty area and awesome to see trees that old. And yes I did wonder to myself how much wood one could get out of a tree like that!

Bring on the tree hugger comments as well:thumbs:

I will let you know next time. We did end up getting lost in the woods for a few hours on saturday. Turned out ok though just had to do some bush whacking and ascents of a few hills.

Is that in the Rothrock State Forest? I went to college just south of there (Juniata College in Huntingdon) and we used to snowmobile that mountain ridge from Spruce Creek up to Seven Mountains.

Mountain Laurel (PA state flower) or possibly rhododendron.

It's odd that they don't die off in winter. I'm not used to seeing green this time of year other than spruce trees. Looks like you guys don't have much snow either.
My folks in Maine got about 1.5ft a few days ago.

Yea its rhododendron. And Brian K it is in rothrock state forest. There are like 3 state forest/park/nature areas right there. I plan on hopefully doing a lot of hiking in PA this year. Want to do a 42 miler in the Tiadaghton state forest.

The rock gardens in that area are a mountain bikers dream.
