Hello. After years of saying I won' burn wood again, I'm back to my childhood. The first and second floors have propane gas fireplaces, which are nice. The issue is, was, without running the oil furnace the basement got cold. Ice cold. With two exposed Cinder block walls I got frost, ice and a very cold draft coming up through the floor. A Craigslist search and $100 got me a Jotul #4 in nice working condition. I bought a face cord of wood, a bit green, and my neighbor owns a pallet shop. This gives me and endless supply of hardwood scrap chunks. What can I do to improve efficiency? Anyone have experience? I've seen perforated tubes and secondary air ideas. Worth doing? I only need to run this from mid Dec to March-ish in NE PA. I run the back damper at 45° and front open 100-75% to keep stack temp in burn range.
I have 7" pipe out of the stove. 90-24"-90-16" and into a nice brick chimney that runs from the basement up to above the roof. Located in the center of the house. Next year, I'll have seasoned wood ready to go and a stockpile of the hardwood chunks.
