Does anyone have one of these or a different Quadrafire wood burning insert? I am building a new home and this one seems to be one of the only ones that will allow seasoned pine. Not a primary concern but top to bottom on paper, this seems to suit my needs. If anyone has had a nightmare with a quadrafire I would like to know. Thank you.
I don't have any experience with quads, but I've burned seasoned pine in my last few stoves with 0 issues. I would say if the quad fits.....burn it. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
I burn pine in my Jotul, all I get is heat in return. I don't think I've ever seen types of wood "spec'd" but there's plenty of things I've never seen.
Dead Cutter, welcome aboard. I don't know of any wood stove that specifically states to not use Pine. Do you?
I was going off of what the sales person was telling me. He said the Astria lines he had and the Vermont Casting lines he had would be adversely effected by the pine over time. I didn't look at a manual for either. He said his Napoleon lines and Quadrafire would handle the pine fine and that the Quadrafire were tested solely using pine at the factory. I had only his word to go on and manufacturers are obviously going to say their product is great. I was hoping someone here had a Quadrafire and was having good luck with it.
Hmmm Horkn has a Quad 4100 insert. Oh, Horkn ......where ya at, bud? He's prolly workin' on his motorsickle.
You's guys! Ok, I'm here. Guess what I'm choochin'in my Quadrafire 4100i insert? Pine. It burns it fine, but so does any other stove. The key is that the wood, be it pine, oak, hickory, ash whatever, is dry enough. 20% moisture content or less is what you are looking for. Back to quadrafire stoves. They are well built, good looking, and pretty simple to use.
I mean, it's a fire right? No need to reinvent the wheel. I bet you could even run a Quadrafire stove.
You'll be fine with a Quad if thats what you get. I'm going on 15+ years running a 4100i, 24/7, all winter long. No major issues. Replace the door gasket and the side bricks. Also needed a new squirrel cage fan. The top baffle is still going strong. One little thing, on the 4100i the fan forces air out under the top, it looks like the 5100i is the same. Because of that the top doesn't work very well as a heating surface for a steam pot. I wouldn't believe a word the salesman is saying about pine being detrimental to a stove. It all comes down to a matter of always burning dry seasoned wood.
Agreed. The salesman is misinformed at some point. I can't imagine the manufacturer used wet wood for testing and dried pine burns clean. 21 years of pine at my previous home Dead Cutter and never more than flyash in the pipe. And most of those years were before the Pine Beetle epidemic, still had to season the wood.
We're happy with our Quad insert too. Baffle board replaced, plus a brick or 2. Oil the latch every few weeks. Makes life easier. They say it takes a pretty big fireplace to fit that 5100. Be sure to measure good.
That guy from Wyoming a few posts up with pics around his yard, showing not a tree for miles... Rumor is he burnt pine in his stove - Once. See what happened to him! Myself - I burn pine in my IS all the time - heats the house just fine.
X2, it is simply incredible about how much misinformation is out there about burning pine. I had a Fire Chief from the next town over tell me that burning pine causes creosote buildup and chimney fires. What about unseasoned red oak? No problem, the sap in pine is what causes creosote and chimney fires. I walked away and grabbed another hot dog.
