I know I've got a slight timing issue with this load of wood but I just couldn't pass this up. A 12 to 14 face cord load of recently cut red oak. The timing issue is that I don't have wood for winter 2014/2015 yet and if I'm real lucky this load will be ready for winter 2015/2016. I do have some hickory on the way, no pics yet, but it's unlikely it will be ready for next winter either.
Nice score, but that pic must be very deceiving. Doesn't look to anywhere near 12 "face". How did you manage to stumble on this? Someone decided they didn't want it after it got all bucked up? Should be burnable by winter of '15-16, if you get it all s/s soon. Maybe not ready for prime time, but still burnable. I wouldn't turn it down, that's for sure.
The pic is a bit deceiving. Doesn't show the depth or length of the pile very well. Found the ad on CL. An excavation company clearing some land and he has a bunch of it I guess.
Ground is still almost completely frozen too. Tri axle dump truck delivered the load and barely left a track in the yard. The high for yesterday was +16 though and it was -5 when I left for work this morning. Come on spring, hurry up and get here already.
The plan for 2014/2015 wood is to wait a month or so when the price drops here and pick up whatever I can that has little to no soft maple. The wood I have left right now is ash and it puts out more heat and burns longer than the soft maple. Oak is very difficult to get around here except for a few odd pieces every now and then. That's why I bought the truck load when I saw it advertised. I've been telling myself all winter I'd pay a premium for the better stuff and this worked out to somewhere between $50 and $58 a face cord. Sorry about the face cord thing. That's just how it's sold around here.
For sure, pictures never do justice. That is why a lot of guys put their saw or something by it for perspective, but it still is difficult. Good for you getting that wood. You will appreciate it. But I would not turn down soft maple. Great for burning during the day and if you have some wood that is a bit difficult to get going nicely, a couple soft maples on the bottom will get that fire going quickly. Makes super great kindling wood too when split in about 1" x 1" and it splits like cutting butter.
Pretty sweet, how big are the rounds? If he has more and they are big enough to make 8x8s out of them, I'd be interested in his number.
S&W, Most of the rounds in the load I got are big enough to give you 8x8"s. Some of them are too big for me to lift by myself. He's in Fulton clearing land next to the race track. I paid more to get him to come almost to Sylvan Beach. And the truck was loaded as heavy as the pic in his ad.
Now that is an understated ad if it is all Oak. I saw that and assumed it was the typical mixed crap. Thanks for the tip.
What I got looks to be all oak unless there is a few pieces mixed in the pile somewhere. I've got a few hours splitting time into it since Sunday afternoon and haven't come across anything else. I assumed the same when I first saw the ad a few weeks ago and decided to call and ask. Glad I did call now even with the extra I paid to get it here.
