I have a friend trying to install a new wood stove and having a heck of a time getting the inspector to pass it.

    The UL number is 1482.

If there is any information for Michigan mechanical code regarding solid fuel out there it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Usually, AHJs go by the manufacturer’s listed clearances. Those are determined by testing to the UL 1482 standard, as tested by an independent laboratory. It is not something the end user has any control over.

NFPA 211 is the generally accepted standard when it comes to installing unlisted heaters.

Does the friend have the manual? Like Jeff said, all info should be in there.
Is this a used stove, perhaps......no manual? How old is the stove?
    So many questions.........

    Thank you Jeff.

I am home now so I will give the whole story and hope for good solid advice.

Thedude Myself and a another friend installed his first stove bought at lowes an England stove works Madison in his house. It was failed because it said conforms to UL #1482 not tested to UL #1482 It was made to e sold in Canada but somehow got shipped to lowes and I did not catch that little detail.

The inspector told him it absalulty has to be either UL 127 or 737 no questions asked then said he had a friend at a stove shop near by and to go buy one of their stoves. That is a bit fishy in my book.. I told him that it doesnt matter as long as its UL 1482 and so we went and purchased a Drolet Blackomb for his house at a big discount.

Today the inspector came back and repeated 727 or 137 and that 1482 isnt in his books therefore its wrong and once again told him he needed to go buy a different stove. John called Drolet and they told him the inspector is an idiot. He is so upset hes ready to rip everything out at this point.

What I want is the michigan mechanical code to print out and show this bafoon hes wrong....

let me add they keep asking for a certificate of ul testing and drolet told him there isnt such a thing and that they do not issue a UL certificate with anything because the manual is what they go buy.

Sounds like you are dealing with an inspector with the "God" complex, good luck with that. No one in the building dept is going to help you and they will NEVER admit if they are wrong. Again good luck.

Playing a bit of devils advocate here but other than it being "the right thing to do" and in some cases for home owners insurance purposes what's the point of involving permits, inspectors, etc? Certain areas are just ridiculous with all that crap. There are towns in my area that will fine you for not obtaining permits to take trees down on your property. I'm irritated for you guys.

Maybe he (the inspector) can show you where is says it in his code book or what code he is going by. Is it a county inspector or some outside company hired by the county like PCI (Professional Code Inspection). Go up the chain of command until you see it in writing.

Just call insurance company and have them come check it out.
I had my brother inspect my install (he's an HVAC contractor, and it was basically a rubber stamp kinda thing) and once they took pics and saw his report, we were gooder to go. Didn't bother with inspector gadget (although the guys here are pretty cool, some aren't).
Perhaps your area is different though?

First the municipal code will be listed on the net for state and local gov. if it isn't (Which I highly doubt) then go to town and request a copy of the local ordinances- I dislike xyz inspectors like this and have had my go around with several over the years. Also sounds like some nepatism or crony type thing is going on- that is an absolute no-no for a municipal employee ( but not unusual in small towns). In the last 20 or so years code compliance has become a nightmare - most of it is a follow the money type thing.
So tape measure, camera and a copy of the local codes - document every inch- UL listing is a paid for Item by the Manf. they pay UL ( might be a Canadian version as well) to be able to put that seal on the unit or in the booklet. For a lot of this the Canadian code is mostly US equivalent. Drolet is a section of SBI ( a Canadian conglomerate) along with Osburn, Caddy Enerzone,Century heating stoves and some others. If all you have is the Canadian version of the Manual you should be able to down load a US version from the net or call Drolet directly for same. Hope this of some help - Good luck

IDK about Michigan, but here a local fire marshal on fire department out ranks inspectors who know nothing about solid fuels.

Kinda the same with the guys/gals sent out by Ins co. - don't know squat about ins and outs of solid fuel devices, least wise the last 2 I had interaction with didn't.

Thats what he ended up doing. Monday he is going down to talk with a higher up and explain what has been going on.

I did some research and discovered the codes they keep telling him are for fireplace not freestanding solid fuel room heaters. He ended up going down to the stove shop the guy kept recommending and was pleasantly surprised by the friend of the inspector. The friend refuted everything the inspector has been saying and even went as far as to say that they not only install stoves with UL 1482 but that his friend approves them all the time. they even looked up the first stove that we installed and said if it states conforms to UL 1482 then it is acceptable.

The reason for getting it installed and passed is because the Insurance company asks for the certificate of install in most cases. Out of the 5 I have personally helped Install for friends only one did not ask. They did send a request in the mail a few weeks later for the certificate though.

The crazy thing is the inspector didn't even date or sign the original inspection ticket! All he wrote was does not meet 127 or 737 pipping... Piping?? :loco:

It is State the Eaton county does not do inspections they refer to the state.

He got Drolet to mail him all the information that he needs to present on Monday to the state and I believe the signed it too. We are even making a timeline of all that has been going on. As for pics o we got those! Im rather proud of the install considering the tight space limitations on his roof and house! :dex:

Nothing fancy but defiantly good for the budget involved. He found the hearth pad on sale with a small chip and the stove at a great price! We even found all the Simpson Durovent at 20% off from TSC.
