Hoping my roof dumps in the next couple of days. Even though it doesn't have much pitch, I don't usually need it warm, just warm enough any sun can heat up the dark green metal and start the slide. If it doesn't dump Friday is going to sucketh and I'll have to :emptywallet::emptywallet: to get someone to shovel (heights are not my friend)

Temps actually went up overnight from 4 deg to 15 deg. This morning the house was warm and the first floor heat registers were cold meaning the basement stove was all that was needed. A little HHO for the second floor but not much.

Not a fan of ladders either . Its either roof rakes, leave it or hire someone.

I've hired only once and that was several years ago with all the snow buildup and no melting due to cold-I am convinced that the crew damaged the roof so that wont happen again unless critical circumstances. Roof was old enough and time for replacement so it wasnt a huge deal but I am not letting anyone up there on a 2 year old roof.

I used the roof rake to get the edges of the eaves, but that is all I can reach. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this little warm up will do the trick.

I have extension poles to reach up to 50' w/ the roof rake - if you find you need them this week, let me know.

I can barely control the length I have on my rake - my shoulder didn't even like that (nor the other stuff I have been doing because of the weather). You can keep those poles right over there in your area buddy. Thanks for offering

I only have to climb 10 feet onto the low porch roof, and been doing it for years (12 ft step ladder), so that's not an issue here. But if I wasn't comfortable w/ it, I'd be hiring someone, no question about it. Seems that every year someone in town, or in NH is badly injured doing snow removal work. I only do it because we have to w/ the low-pitched roofs, and only get up there if it's deemed safe, else the snow rake is used.. But it takes hellish long, using the snow rake.

Exactly Larry. Get the first 2 sections cleared on the roof, grab some sn*w up high, add the pole on the end. Pull down that course, remove the pole, pull that cleared sn*w down -> off from the 2nd course level. It ain't pretty, and (x) times the work, but if you have to reach out / or up high w/o climbing (there have been times I couldn't get on the low porch roof here, due to ice buildup), it's the only way.

Front porch roof and front main roof done, with the front 4' of the loft roof (top & side facing the main roofline). I'm beat. Top 16" was actually light, then a thin ice sheet, and last 6" of packed snow down to the roof. Went quicker than anticipated, which is always good.

Sun peeked out between 9am - 12pm, now mixed clouds. We'll see how the ice scrim melts off the main roofline to gain access up top tomorrow. Have to sn*wblow the front path & access over to the oil fill again, the paths are buried in shoveled roof slushie. Yay.

No rest for the weary - time to get busy. Beer later. :coldone:

Forgot about the shoulder, sorry. If it doesn't drop and you're concerned, contact me & I'll stop over and pull down to 1/4 of the roof line, if needed.

( * You may get warmer over there for melt, but they're only calling for above 32F for 12 hrs, before the rain starts Thursday here. Winter sucks. )

It sure does, and then some. Mostly because of ice and wind. Hate it. What's with this rain after two weeks of sub zero temps and a blizzard. Ugh, I hear that sucking sound! :jaw:

I wouldn't encourage any to climb who isn't sure footed and secure. That certainly isn't me. Big folks like me, (ok, fat) have no business up on a ladder. Our center of gravity is very limited and easily exceeded on a ladder. Lost a dear family member who fell from a ladder while trying to help. My Dad used to climb up antennas. I can't do much more than a step ladder. And now that is limited to two steps.

I know my limits too. 20ish years ago, I made a bunch of shelters for the new shrubs and rodies. Plywood about 2ft x 3ft with a hinge to fold em up. They always went up in the rafters of the garage about 8-9 feet up with no issue getting them up there or down again. Havnt needed them for 10 years but needed one this year for a new rodie. I had a heck of a time getting one down and realized age is catching up to me as I did not feel comfortable at all doing it on a step ladder any more. Luckily there were pallets of pellets right under the area I needed so just stood on those.
