I hear you rope on being where I am at. I can’t do any porting or anything for at least another year or it will void my warranty lol. But I’m looking to get a bucking saw in bout a year and half.

I just sent my 2-3 month old 261 to get ported, void the 2 year warranty. And it will be worth it! After I picked up a ported 026 I did not touch the 261, only thing left to do was send it off.

I'm just going to play devil's advocate here for a minute. A whole lot of people can or do get by with a stock, clamshell saws. These days they are cheaper to manufacture and sell than pro saws, are very reliable and many have very good warranty's out of the box. I just don't want everyone thinking that the "only" saw has to be a ported pro saw. For most people, a stock clamshell is a great option.

I agree. However with better options for the same price, the question is why not go with the better option?

For what it’s worth...I had a 291 and cut prolly 30 cords with it and it never missed a beat. Started every time in 3 pulls or less.

Nothin wrong with a 291 ... it’s a fine saw that should provide many years of use as long as it is Well-Maintained !!!

I totally agree with you. In fact, I own 3 "proper-ported" saws, MMWS MS261 Treemonkey MS361 and MMWS MS461 . Do I need them? No. Do I love running them? Heck yeah! Am I very fortunate to be able to afford them for just occasional use? Absolutely. My point is that the average Harry Homeowner can get perfectly good service from a $200-400 clamshell, and still have up to $1K left in his pocket. There's no shame in that game.

I agree with the “Harry Homeowner” angle ... however you can do quite a bit with a Ripper-Chainsaw - from turning big oaks into lumber (and let’s be real here ... you cannot go into home-depot or Lowe’s and buy a 6x12x 20 ft long!) to general work ... IF you offer value I believe the Pro-Saw will pay for itself ! And then you have Hours of enjoyment

Key word "Had" which implies to me that you have probably upgraded to a pro saw. Which maybe if you would have bought that pro saw to begin with you would have never had to upgrade. I don't know if that's the case or not just throwing that out there. Of course a 291 will get the job done for a certain amount of time, everything breaks down eventually and I just try to look further into the future in my investments.

Happy Sunday funday everyone, hope everyone is doing well! Pass on a little bit of kindness, there are people who need it.

I have plenty of larger saws now so didn’t need the 291. I kept my muffler modded 025 over a 241 and I kept my 291 over a stock 261. For the price gap vs what I was doing those two saws were great. Now I cut a ton of larger trees and went bigger.

Yeah I understand if you already have a 025 there would be little point to buy a 241, and the same for the 291 vs. 261. At that point you are just better off upgrading to a larger saw as you have all the small stuff under control, which sounds like what you did. The price gap is the main thing I think that changes people's minds, from pro to the lesser saws. I have only ran pro saws so I don't even know what the difference would be or feel. I also just have a thing for magnesium, go figure.

I've had my 290 for 6 years. Between what I cut for myself, and what I cut helping other people, it probably does 5-6 cords a year. It's given me zero problems. My neighbor has an MS360 and my saw will cut circles around his. Why? Because I've never seen him use a sharp chain. He totally murders his chain with a file.

Plus 1 for the chain. Makes or breaks any saw! Very good point.

Well I went for the 261. Under 11 pounds I think it said and a 50cc saw. I was able to get it brand new for $450 out the door. Thanks for the help guys.
