Looking to buy a nice pine box to store pellets inside the house. I store the pellets in the garage but having to go out for pellets in the snow and ice gets to be a pain. I normally go through about 10 bags of pellets a week as we are presently running both stoves. wife wants something "purdy" to keep next to the stove.

I keep the pellets out in the garage and then during the non-precipitation days, I tote them around in cart to the back of the house (we have a daylight basement) and then store 30 bags on a pallet indoors in a spare bedroom we store excessive crap. It means once fully stored, I have a months worth of bags that are 25 feet from my stove.

Keep them in the basement in their original bags on pallets. It's no bother going down there once a day to grab some. I think imacman had a real nice bin for storing a few bags worth near the stove. Similar to the idea of using a wood box to store a decent amount of firewood near the stove. If he still has the pic, that may give you some ideas.

We store half a ton in a room in the basement but then keep a cache of bags around the corner in the utilities room in large plastic bins. Works great for unwanted punctures

Well funny that you should bring this up as just yesterday the wife proclaimed that she wanted me to build a nice reclaimed wood bin for the pellets which I am kind of kicking around in the noggin for a design. Currently I keep about 6 ton in the basement and each night I screen about 5 bags that go up to the first floor (stove room)where we have a cedar chest that they are in drying out further before they go into the stove.

When i get figured out what the design and let the Mrs. know and she changes it and then I actually build it I will post some pictures.

I burn a lot of pellets so this works out good for me after a day at work I come home and do my chores with the pellets, actually relaxing and rewarding IMG_0075.JPG

Thanks for posting. I may go the reclaimed wood route also, I will however buy one as my carpentry skills leave a lot to be desired. LOL>

Ahh heck man give it a go ! Not sure where in NY you live going to guess upstate somewhere so finding some reclaimed wood will not be that difficult but if you live in or near the Rotten Apple its dang expensive and might be a costly project. Lived quite a while in upstate NY myself Hudson Valley so not really Upstate Upstate NY but where I lived if you were 2 hours north of the Apple we considered it upstate.

You screen all your pellets before they go into the hopper? I'd love to have a rig for that. Have you got a pic of the screen you use for that?

I don't screen everything, but I'm new at this game. I usually pour about two thirds of the bag directly into the hopper and then sift the remaining third (bottom of the bag) with a little hand scoop. (It's actually a cat litter box scoop, but it's got slots that are just under 1/4 inch wide and works pretty for sorting out the dust and pellet chips.)

I use the galvanized trough I got from TSC painted black , it holds a little more than bag . My Honey wanted something prudy too , she's going to stencil a design on it . It's prefect for her she can use the scoop to load the hopper , when I'm not around . The rest of my stash in the attached garage .

Depending on your stove and the amount and quality of the pellets you burn most people do not need to screen, but it is one of those things i sickly somehow enjoy. Feel like I am getting the best of each bag of pellets and not introducing more dust to the first floor of the house , my wife has had chronic asthma her entire adult life and after a frustrating stressed out day it feels good to "do my chores" (from the old school farm culture)

I'll take a few pics but am one who uses the resources that are available around me you can probably substitute the 2X with 1X to make it lighter . I also had a 4' ladder that I use to set one end on and 5 gallon buckets to receive the screened pellets. Thinking about it now may not be practical for you but when i get a chance later I'll take some pics.

Haa thats Brilliant Will but I would have to get one of them huge watering trough but that is something the wife could do instead of me having to build something. All right back to reality, that would be sensible she's not going to go for it so back to thinking what I am gonna build.

I want it to hold the same amount of pellets as the cedar chest, works for me but I am sure she wants to take up less of a footprint but I do not want to be bending down trying to reach the bottom of the box to far. I don't know keep the pics coming or I am welcome to suggestions for functionality and design if I don't come up with something on my own soon the Pinterest Queen will be flooding me with pictures of this and that and this and that. Help me avoid the Pinterest barrage people ! Some smart and creative people here help a brother out ...o_O

The bigger one wasn't going to cut it with her . I got me one of those Pinterest Queens too . How about a salt box design something like this only put it on legs or a platform to raise it up a bit so you don't have to bend down so far .

JUST IN TIME ! She's got the IPAD and coming my way :bug: False alarm some other project that will require my carpentry skill set.
Dang Will she will eat that up I can use some of the reclaimed oak from the Harvard Museum ! I think she will Love it man you must have turned up quite a few smoothies last night simply Genius this morning. Thanks man I owe you , been many years since I have been down to the Poconos when i do make it will have to thank you in the form of refreshments .
Will have to figure out some serious sturdy legs as it will hold 200 lbs of pellets and still look attractive .
Just sparked a memory of what I used on my farm in N.Y. I had scored in one of the barns a stage coach carrying box which was constructed from massive Old growth wood was 36" wide single pieces that were 2 1/2" thick. Used it to hold firewood. Sorry just had a quick flashback.
