So last October I pulled out my cast iron heat exchanger panels and got smart and took them outside and sprayed the gunk off them with the hose. It worked beautifully. But I didn't towel dry them or let them dry on their own long enough. I put them back in the stove and fired it up carefree of warping the metal and assuming it would dry them fast anyway. All true. But when I took them out today to do the same thing, I came across a thin film of rust. This time i hand dried them and am letting them house dry. Anybody else do this??
Can't say I have Dot but no better way to learn a lesson that you will remember for the remainder of your life then f'ing up, its not how you F 'up its how you recover !
When I take my cast out to clean, I wash it down with hose, and then blow dry with air compressor or leaf blower. Then I paint the baffle for the AE. Makes it look nice thru the glass all off season.
Cast will rust, while you are blowing it dry with an air hose.I remember taking cast blocks out of the caustic soda(automotive rebuild shop),hosing it off,and showed surface rust before I could air blow it.We (and other rebuilders) used a product called Cast Blast.Works well.Otherwise, dry it in the sun,or air,and just spray with dry moly or dry graphite.
