After all the windstorms we have had, I should actually build some hatches (or shutters) on my house so I could physically batten down the hatches, and today were are due for another storm. A blizzard actually. It almost missed us, but then tracked just enough west to hit us. It is expected this afternoon, with 18 inches of snow and 50 mile per hour winds. Today it is all about getting ready for the heavy blizzard. Get my bulldozer going, get out the generator, get all the equipment stuffed inside buildings, get extra hay for the sheep and wait it out. Of course that means cranking the wood stove and seeing how hot it can get in here as we watch the snow fall (1-3 inches per hour they are saying).
Then we are shafted. They are showing the eye of the storm going into Nova Scotia, unless it tracked west even more over night.
And my skidder is broke too! Last year it was forever being used to tug stuck snowplows out of the ditch. It is kind of a pain being a snowplow towing service, but gets a person out of the house on a snowy night for a few bucks too.
Sorry you are getting that my friend. I will have to look and see if it tracked west overnight, on the news last night they made it sound like Maine was about the only state that would get hit by the storm. I was in NO WAY trying to say "oh, but we are getting it so worse than you", I just thought it was a Maine only storm. Last night they were saying it was a "Downeast" storm, which is the east, but lower part of the State of Maine. A guy on this forum lives there I believe, and he is supposed to get absolutely hammered. I am talking feet and not inches! We already got snow up to our knees, so this storm could put it up to our waist which is about the cut-off for logging. It gets done, just a LOT of work. With my skidder broke down. I am back to logging with my bulldozer. It can handle the snow, it just cannot handle the snow and stumps. It tends to get high centered like a turtle because I have been cutting wood with my skidder for over a year now and do not pay attention to low stump heights so much. BTW: It just started snowing here.
This storm is hitting everyone from Norfolk, Va to Halifax! the coastal areas are supposed to get slammed, and it's holding "true" here!!! ... I'll get more pics when it get's a bit lighter out.
Cape May, NJ Hourly Forecast | Weather Underground The weather prompter here said we had some winds at 35+ My little wind meter here said 42. Doesn't matter...
Here's a couple more looking out the window. Notice how "black the sky is" Looking at the wood pile is West South West, that's where it's coming from, but the wind is hitting us "dead North East"!
Good luck up there Lodgedtree and anyone coastal New England! I didn't mean to hijack your thread, Sorry!!! Dave out!
All set here. Cars are parked out if the way to facilitate snowblowing tomorrow. Snowblower all gassed up and ready to go. Brought enough wood inside for the day and tonight. I have a 7gal jug of water filled. With a well - no power, no water. Temps Friday/Saturday nights forecasted for 10-15 below, and gusty winds. Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk
I'll be spending the day watching it snow while taking Christmas down, putting it into tubs, and back down into the basement. Oh, and keeping the stove burning. Sent from my SM-T280 using Tapatalk
Good luck to you guys on the east coast. Not really supposed to get much this far inland, calling for a high of -15° for a high on Saturday. Stay safe and hopefully your ready
Yep, east coast is ready. No hatches here either but they are battened down regardless. Forecast is for 60mph gusting and 12-15" followed by bitter cold Friday. 10 gals of gas ready, wood, yeah we got that too. Stay safe folks!
