Even though the temperature outside rose to 20 today, it was frigid out there with a SW wind 24 gusting to 32. Freeze ones face fast.
It was -6 when I left the house this morning. Saw as low as -13 on my ride.to Chester, VT. Feeling much better than I did this morning. Hopefully this continues
Had a baseboard heater freeze in a cold corner of the house. A couple minutes with the hair dryer in and it's open again. Caught it just in time. Set the aquastat back on the boiler and will let the water circulate during these really cold night. Burning a little propane is cheap enough insurance in my book.
That coulda been messy! Wonder if it’s possible or feasible to put a small electric pump in the water line to keep it flowing enough to prevent freezing?
Yes, a small pump could be added to just that zone. Or a larger one added it is for us on dedicated pump. But it sounds like turning up the temp in that zone is the best option.
Monin all... ... brrrrrr, good old fashion winter here in Maine so far this year. Cold stretch is getting a break tomorrow for a big dump of snow and then back into -20s. I hope everyone is spreading the word again this year, reminding folks to open lower cabinet doors on any sinks along an outside wall of the house, so heat can get to that area. Can get stone cold in there in super low temps outside. Get a bear hug around that woodstove... ... have a safe day!
You don't have a Therm Guard? well worth every penny. I set mine to go on 3-4 times per day for 8 minute cycles and don't have any issues with my pipes. Even though the FHW goes thru the garage, which has been down to 26* these last few days (yes, they are well insulated).
Caffeine going in while I hang out in the chair. Slept in a little and just said good bye to wife and kids as they got off to school. Breakfast time and decide what to get done today. I will be bringing in a good amount of firewood today. Mostly hardwood. Friday and Saturday overnights are going to be coldest yet from what the guessers are saying. We are getting some snow right now, but not much expected at all.
This is an OLD system...with only 1 zone covering the ~1800 ft2 upstairs and full basement. I don't have any control over heat distribution. Soon, hopefully this summer, I'll be ripping out all of the old steel pipe up to the radiators and replacing with PEX and establishing zones along with a new wood boiler. It was a LOT warmer last night than it has been (3* at 10PM rising to 15* by 7 AM), but I set the aquastat back from 160 to 120 and turned the thermostat up a little. The baseboards were warm, but the stove still carried the majority of the heating load. I will look into a therm guard or something similar when I design the new system, but I won't be using the wood stove unless the power is out and/or it gets ridiculously stupid cold outside.
Good morning, coffee is about over,,3rd cup. Below zero temps have been a challenge, fortunately I have the gear to get out of doors and enjoy it. c/s/s a load of wood Monday, burned brush yesterday making room in the woodlot for 2 cycle fuel mix burning later today. Hoping this finds you good people staying warm. Peace.
Big day here......but not for me. 99 lbs has her last day of work today! Yup, she's joining the ranks of retired! I figure I'll be back to work by Friday........
No big plans yet, just take it easy and stay put. She has brought up a trip to DC a few times this past month though...... It would be nice to see the monuments/museums/etc but I can do without the potential of crime.
I think downtown DC around the mall is about the last place you have to worry about crime. Lotsa Homeland Security, Park police, and every flavor of cop in between.
