I am looking to replace the chaps I have now. The ones I have provide protection both in the front and the back of my legs, calf and thigh. What I see on the market are apron chaps with no protection in the back and wrap chaps which provide protection just to the back of the lower leg as well as the front. Most of my cutting is done in the woods and I have a lot of brush and briars to contend with. What style have you found best for those conditions.

Do they protect the back of your leg, calf to thigh?

Not all the way up to the calf, but extra protection on ankle and lower calf.

Nope. I've had a couple of close calls. I'd never trust anything but fully certified pants/chaps. DT Firehose are nice pants though.

I just wear the chaps that cover the front and sides. I used to wear them over regular jeans, and never had an issue. We have nasty buckthorn here. That stuff makes blackberries look like grass.

I just got a pair of Dickie's insulated bibs. I'll try my Forester chaps over my bibs next weekend when it's not supposed to be -245° C.

I have the Stihl chaps that zip up the inside, so cover from the bottom of your back pocket to the ankle.
    They are warm!!

I have been looking at the Stihl chaps but they don't have 360 degree pictures. I guess I will have to see my Stihl dealer and have a look at them.

I have husqvarna chaps. Work fine. I work in some nasty thorny crap and no issues.

I use Stihl full wrap that buckle, had good luck with them so far. 10yrs on the same style. The Husky chaps in my avatar pic are 1/2 wrap the I used in warmer weather, but they wore out finally. Just use the full wraps now.

X2 love mine! They cover from bottom edge of the chap to almost the back of your knee. I go with jeans and chaps even during cold months. The chaps keep me somewhat warm and running through the brush offer major protection. Lots of rose bushes, raspberries, locust and thorn apples around here!
Only regret is that I didn’t get the next size up they are a touch short 027FB029-50FB-4E09-8720-C0442EEE7BBB.png
P.s. those are Duluth flex firehose pants under the chaps :D

Have you thought about chainsaw jeans? Some have the Kevlar all away around the leg and you can wear wool under them. Here is a link.

I won the pants style Kevlar (along with a ton of other chit)a long time ago at the regional GOL finals. They didn't last long like the chaps do.
Hated them. Hot AF , reduced mobility, LOUD - sounded like 100 fat chicks in spandex walking through a store when you stopped to grab a sandwich for lunch.
If I was looking for briar protection I'd just wear Fire hose pants under chaps. Not a good idea to be cutting behind you anyway.

campinspecter has a pair that are jean material and aren't noisy at all. Different brand I guess.

I have been known to wear my chaps while picking blackberries. It is nice to have some protection on the back of your legs, expecially when trying to back out of a tight spot surrounded by nasty briars.

I got the Labonville's, and am happy. Definitely add length to your normal pant length or they will stop above the ankle. The next length longer will hit just right.

Excellent thread, and timely. I've been wanting to get a pair of chaps for some time now.

Thanks for all the opinions and options.

I have a pair of Swede pro wrap chaps that have served me well these past 10 years or so. I’m 6’1” I ordered the longer length & they’re perfect.
