Some pics of the big red oak we cut down last week. There's two big logs from the tree (40" diameter at the base, went up around 35' and split into two trunks and topped out around 65'), not sure of I'm going to mill them or buck them up for firewood......either way, ended.up with a heap of wood out of it...... This weekend we have a decent sized Norway maple to do (technical, lots of piecing) and mid next week I have a nice sized honey locust to drop.......but I won't be getting any of the wood!!
Looks good in the last pick but looks like some rot in the pic by the stump. Did you cut some out? How close were the powerlines? As always great pics.
The power lines were within 15'......had to piece it down to the main trunk! The taproot was dead and gone from the tree (I see that a LOT with the big red oaks I cut around here), it was only rotted in the first 4-5' from the ground. The rest of the trunk is in perfect shape. I'll probably take it out to Chris's mill and do the right thing with it!
I've got some other honey locust to cut down in my "free time", which won't be until mid to late winter if I'm lucky..... The homeowner already promised the wood from the one I'll be cutting down next week to his buddy. That's fine by me (I can't BELIEVE I'm saying this!!), I've literally got a MOUNTAIN of wood in my garden right now awaiting stacking!!!
You're gonna need a storage lot for firewood pretty soon if you want to have a yard & garden Maybe donate some to scouts to sell & take a tax write off. Is to much wood a good problem to have?
We're working on making a storage lot at my in-law's place this winter.....we're gonna need it for sure!! Might donate some to the scouts to sell......that.is a really good idea, Dave!!
Scott that looks a bit crooked in that first picture but no doubt you can still get plenty of good lumber from it. Yet one could really get excited having that to buck up for firewood! Mucho goodies there.
maybe, eventually, I'll buy a live action camera and post it 'real time'........who knows! FWIW, I don't mess around with my phone in the tree....it stays in the truck. Hence the reason I don't have any aerial pictures yet. I'm looking into a GoPro camera for my hardhat......we'd be able to get some good action shots then!
Had a neighbor down the street ask if I could drop a silver maple for him that the power co. butchered up. I can have the wood and he'll haul the brush away. I looked and some would have to be pieced down before it would go away from the wires. I love helping people out but after some thought....let's see silver maple that I have to work at to keep from going to the lines or many other choices of hardwood dropped into the corn field and no wires. Guess what I chose.
yes, LP, you have to be SUPER careful......one wrong move and you can DIE. Literally. Just talking to a buddy at work who used to work for Penn Line (a subcontract company that trims/removes trees on powerline right-of-ways), he was telling me a buddy of his who's climbed and topped trees for over 25 years had a fall a couple weeks ago....and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Just goes to show you that, even with years and years of experience, it only takes one wrong move to ruin your life.....
In some instances it is, MWN. But, this is one of those trees where it would have been really tough to get it in, the neighbors to my buddy have a tight back yard, and there were power lines/phone/cable in the way on the other side. Honestly, I enjoy being up in the tree. It's kinda peaceful 60' up in the air. You're strapped in, its nothing but you and God up there...... Some of my best prayer and reflection has come from up in trees......
God bless you and keep you safe up there. Me,......... I get a fuuny feeling in my rear and sometimes a hint of dizzyness at hieghts. Give me my slug gun, and that all goes away though. I nearly rolled off a bluff at the Grand Canyon when I got close enough to the edge to see how far down the bottom was. Vertigo I believe? Hell of a thing for one's body to decide that time was a good time to loose balance completely.
