We have a Husqvarna 550XP 18" Oregon bar and it came with a Husqvarna H25-72DL semi-chisel chain. .325 x .058 Looking for a sharpener, leaning towards the Pferd. Anyhow, while looking at sharpeners I see that there are many options for different 'points' for chains. We are cutting for personal use. Is there any advantage/ disadvantage to a semi-chisel chain for our use?
Welcome stumplifter! Semis used for cutting in dirty conditions. It's very durable. I use full chisel for all my farwood. As long as I don't touch dirt, it's been great. One of these little buggers really helped me in the beginning. $15 or so for a whole "kit".
Just be aware that those great little Hoosavarna roller guides come in two sizes for .325" chain. The narrow kerf model part number ends with 8 and the standard kerf model P/N ends with 9. Hoosavarna? Listen to real Swedes pronounce it.
My 550 shines using Stihl full chisel chain (yellow) Tried all the husky chains including their FC. Stihl wins. For one it cuts a wider kerf which helps clear chips and stop bar binding. Ran into a lot of chips jamming under the chain using husky. Very easy to bind also. Much less stretch also. Local Stihl dealer has loops all made up for “those bastard saws”
I use a lot of the Stihl chain too(yellow RS). Stays sharp longer than the Oregon. Do you have 3/8th on your 550?
To be honest I couldn’t give you a difinitive answer on that right now. It shouldn’t be! Never changed the sprocket. Would it be possible to run a 3/8’s chain on a .325 sprocket?
Thanks for the confirmation on that. Not ported, opened up the muffler a bit tho. Fairly peppy little buggers as is. Would be nice to have it ported.
Are you sure it’s semi chisel? The h25 looks like full chisel with the small ramped bumper links. I’ve got to go check what’s on mine at the moment, I think it’s full chisel with no bumpers kind of resembles the 3/8 72lgx Oregon or 33rc Stihl stuff just in .325. As for the file I got one of the granberg clamp on file guides for Christmas a few years ago that has the slide and angle settings. It really makes a nice consistent edge on all the cutters. I’ve still just resorted to free hand filing because it’s fast and easy and I have been happy with the chips coming out The question on semi chisel.... its a personal preference I like full myself, but in dirty wood the semi holds its edge longer. That being said I’ve cut a lot of dirty frozen stuff and have still been happy with full plus it’s faster cutting!
Well Dirt, you are talking to a newbie here, I appreciate the patience and understanding as I wade through the new world of wood and heat, splitters and saws. We bought the saw and splitter brand new, we figured if we were heating with wood that new and reliable was a must. Everything else on the farm is rusty junk, including this guy. The bar and blade were already on the saw from the place we purchased it from. The package that the chain was in is an Husqvarna 5018404-72 H25 072G X (Oregon equivalent 21BP 72). 325 .058/1.5mm WWW search shows it as a semi-chisel, and the teeth do have a radius in the bend (full chisel is a square corner?)
We are all learning and helping each other here everyday ! By the way rusty junk is my thing.... As far as the chain I must have seen the wrong picture when I looked it up earlier. Just for the heck of it this was what’s in my Oregon catalog
I have a Husky 545 that came with a 20" NK .050"bar. .325 H30 chain. Put the H23 chain on it and made a world of difference. I don't like anything about those semi chains full or nothing lol
I looked for a 23rs 80dl 50ga but couldn't find one at my stihl place. So went next door to the husky dealer and got a new h23 instead
