Temps like these make me just enjoy my stove even more. Took out the garbage and filled up my outside hopper, with the wind blowing out there and so cold was nice walking in the house and getting blasted with the stove. Think it might be a bourbon by the stove night. Enjoy your stove on this real cold night!

G, burned my last two bags of 802s a couple days ago. They were very good. They definitely last a long time in the hopper, noticeably longer than others. They are also the closest thing to Vermont’s I’ve seen. Too bad they closed up shop, it was a decent product.

X2. Any drafts get more noticeable with these frigid outside temps.

My stove is an insert, and the chimney is in the center of the house. Only option is to run the oak down 12 feet through the clean-out vertically, then run it another 15-20' to get it outside. Not exactly clean. That's long enough that I assume I would need some inline fan to assist with pulling combustion air.

I saw on the news where another cold spell is following the one we are in. So looks like a least a week before it gets up to 20F. I am not sure why, but to me 15 F and lower is all about the same. I know it isn't but that is how it all feels to me. It is the wind that makes the difference. Windy and single digits is just hell. Dart from house to car only. I saw my grandkids out riding their snow machines. All bundled up, seemed to be having fun. When I was little like them, I don't recall the temperature even being mentioned. I am not sure if we even had an outside thermometer.

Is it possible to draw your combustion air from your chimney? That is how I do it.http://www.duravent.com/docs/product/PVP_PrairieCap and Increaser_W.pdf

Not a bad idea. Do you ever need to do any maintenance on it? The chimney is a long run, about 25ish feet. Roof pitch is crazy steep - a true cape. You wouldn't get me on that roof for all the tea in china, so I'd be farming out the work.

PH are you using that prairie cap? I have looked into that specific part in the past, but didn’t pursue because I was a little concerned about separation between the flue output and air intake; they appear to be very close together inside that cap.

2 degrees here. House is 68. My oil furnace kicked on today 'cause the Tstat is in the dining room and with the wind, it cooled down to 62 where the 'stat is set. I figured I may as well be comfortable so I cranked it up to 65. Might as well burn some oil. It's cheap enough. I usually walk the dogs in the woods every day but I took today off. The wind was brutal. Gonna try again tomorrow.

I think I am going to grab a few bags of Northern Warmth tomorrow. I've tried the green bag and they were pretty darned good. I may splurge and buy a couple purple bags to see what all the hype is. I don't mind the cold, but when it lasts for weeks, it gets tiring!

When the plane landed at midnight (only an hour late), it was 1* - in da big city of Manch Vegas where it is warmer than my area of the state. It was -5* when I got home and is -7* now. Haven't been to bed yet and when I do it will only be for an hour or two then gotta start snow blowing before I take one of my kitties to the vet.

House/pet sitters done good - pellet stoves still running and keeping it toasty inside :)

Amazing how things change as we get older. Same here, sledding on Mt Hood in Melrose Mass or down the embankment of the dead highway in Revere never mattered about temps
