    I just went out and snapped these, this happened over night and is only going to get more froze. We have a heater but only used it once.o_O Gonna get a work out this week!     Don’t worry about that freeze. Use your coil heater for to allow gas off.. beating and pounding the ice can harm the fish.

    How do I know this? My brother builds koi ponds in $50,000 range & imports koi from japan that are over 5gs each...

    I wasn't going to smash the ice. I knew as much, I warmed a patch with a heat gun, it melted and I put the heater in. Thanks for the advise though :) My wife and I built that pond and It was a two week job, so I can appreciate what it takes to do it.

    Someone in a gated well to do subdivision in Illinois was having some Krazy expensive Koi stolen. Well money talks so the cops came and a stakeout was set up and after a couple of days the perpetrator was identified. A blue heron.

    With the cold weather we have been having the past week or so, ice fishing is going great guns now. I went out a couple times with a friend and it was OK but not my cup of tea. We have some very diehard ice fishermen around here.

    Yes! They are B@ST@RDs here! We get a redtail and a Racoon or two through out the year. Lucky the fish have big rocks to hide in and under, we've only lost two in a few years.

    My pond is about that size and 3-1/2 feet deep.
    We bring them into a tank in the garage. In our climate there is no way they would make it.

    This is my mother's Pond a week ago, it's running two heaters and a bubbler. The bubbles have been freezing and well....:hair: have to poke it every day to keep it open.

    I have a friend here in Ohio with the same problem he had to put a screen enclosure over the pond...........birds were flocking there during the day feasting

    We have a good sized Koi pond at work...at least 30 fish ranging from minnow sized to 15" or so...one day someone notices that all the smaller ones are missing...then found tracks in the snow...set a box trap and 2 days later, a large male Mink...someone got a nice Mink stole for Christmas...:whistle:
    They figure he ate at least 25 fish...and some of them pretty good sized and colorful...probably $1000 if we were to buy exact replacements. I haven't seen it, but I was told some of the remaining fish (all large) have bites out of their tails :eek:

    Maine Fish and Game won't allow Koi in this state. They don't want them in the waters. You can't even own them in your own back yard or indoor aquariums. They will Raid anyone reported on having outdoor fish are are not native to the area.

    I did hear that Larry and I can completely understand because of the hundred's of lakes and such. I saw a thing on TV where the Maine fish and game were after a guy who had "alligators" in his house! I think they caught him.

    I'm going to Tractor supply today and get another heater for the pond, It's froze over hard now, the little heater is "barely" doing the job. I shut off the waterfall and filter yesterday, it became a soild block of ice. We are no where near as cold as some of you but it got to 8º last night and it's only 10º now. The weather lady said it'll be below freezing for the next 10 days here:shiver:

    Ice is a good insulator. If you have a heater underneath, once the pond freezes over, the heat loss is reduced significantly and the fish will be fine. The heater should keep the water under the ice from freezing solid.
