I found out today that I am going to Detroit for a week for training for work. I've never been there. Any suggestions on stuff to do/see while I am there?

Don't go out after dark. Stay with people in a group and stay away from 8 mile

I am 60 miles away and like it that way. but not sure it's far enough
If I have a reason to go to Detroit, I only go in daylight , seriously !!!

Well I am so excited to go now... (Sarcasm!)

Maybe my boss will change his mind! I would like the raise that comes with the training though. :)

Ward, the advice to head out during the day, is how I'd go for sure. For the most part, the dregs come out from under the rocks at night. If you have any concerns, your boss should take care of them or not require you to go… anywhere.

If you go, you'll be fine. Cities like Detroit are all the same… most areas are fine, some are not. I don't like any of em… occasionally I hafta deal…

Some years back I was working in Houston at Ellington Field, and staying at a hotel near the George Bush airport.

A co-worker and I went to eat one evening so we were walking to a restaurant (maybe a mile walk) since we didn't have a car (just had a 15 pax government van) Both of us country boys with no "street" knowledge.

We are going down the sidewalk, a bit from the hotel...
All of a sudden hear tires skidding and a car jumps the curb, goes over the sidewalk and into a row of bushes. About ran us over!
    It was a cop car!

Cop cranks down the window and wanted to know what we we were doing walking around there in the dark. Apparently muggers would hide in the bushes, pop out and kill people for clothes, $$, etc.
Cop says something like "you'all are fugging crazy for walking out here"... Then throws it in gear and tears off.

We decided that we weren't too hungry... Walked back with a rock in each hand... Just in case.
First time I saw real life hookers too... They were hanging out in the parking lot of a Denny's at 5AM on a Monday. Classy place!

I know that has nothing to do with Detroit but a big city is a big city. Before moving to Anchorage about 15 years ago I had never been in a place with more than a few stop lights... took me a while to not have near panic attacks driving to drive in that madness!

Greektown it's fun (casino). During the day the stretch of Woodward between the ball parks and the river is the nicest area. Chellie's chili (Chris Chelios' restaurant) is good, so is hockeytown cafe. Both right by Comerica park where the tigers play. Fox theatre, state theater right there too.

The people mover is a good way to get around.

Detroit is no worse than any big city. Use your head, stay out of the residential areas, you'll be fine.

Maybe look for an 'i survived Detroit' t-shirt, lol.

I have been there many times and even worked there for a time. It's not all bad there is a lot of nice things to do and see. As pyro said stay out of the residential areas and you'll be fine. Downtown is really pretty nice and I have to admit I like the Detroit institute of arts and Benihana Japanese steakhouse. Lots to do.

About the scare thing that is a real problem in the residential areas so if your driving remember that..... I had a flat 1.5 miles from work and walked to work got the service truck came back and my car had been totally stripped down. No tires, hood, doors well you get the pic. It is an abandon pizz hole in some areas and others are really nice.

Thanks, I do not really want to go. Maybe I can get a hotel right next to where I need to go for training. Then I won't leave at all. Not a fan of going by myself!

I had to go to Chicago in January, scared me bad, I didn't leave the hotel except for training. This country girl likes corn fields not concrete ;)

Country girls usually grow up with lots of common sense. I'm sure you're gonna do just fine.
