I've never burned Box Elder, but have a ton of it around my Dad's property...I was planning to just use it for campfires and whatnot; any reason to season it for stove use?

It burns about the same as silver maple IMHO. I burn a lot of it.............seasons in less than 1 year. Some of it can be difficult to split though.

I've burned a fair share of Box Elder in my OWB good for the shoulder season. Nice Load should be enough for a few days.

Yep like MightyWhitey pointed out burns a lot like silver maple because it is a part of the Maple family if I am not mistaken.

Yep, it's a maple, seasons fast, and when seasoned, burns like paper. I've used it in the shoulder season and to get some harder to start woods burning. It works well for both.

I have a couple cords at the inlaws farm that we took out of a pasture. Burns OK, good enough for shoulder season. Sucks to split! Not as bad as elm, but still no fun.

I won't interntionally go after box elder, but if it needs to be removed, or is easy pickings, or dead standinging I will take it and split it when everything else done.

I was taught in school that another name for Boxelder is " Ash Leafed Maple"

It will also rot fast if not cut, split and stacked off the ground and top covered.

The red color inside makes it good for wood turners.
