you want the cutter to look like you hand filed it and if you do need to touch up in the field it will be easier for you

Yes. I've hit the wheel every 2 chains which is a pima I think. I see why diamond wheels are worth the coin already. :emptywallet:

They will drag. It's called a gullet. And every 3 or 4 sharpenings they should be removed with a file

    Ahhhh........NO

On Oregon chain, round ground chisel chain, aka chisel is ground at 25 degrees. Semi chisel aka chipper chain is ground at 30 degrees.
Generally Stihl chain is 5 degrees steeper respectively for the above.

True square ground chisel requires a special grinder or a very talented individual to sharpen by hand.

OP, get yourself a good light mounted on the bench, you will thank me.

Yes , on the chain. Sorry, I was referring to the tilt angle on the grinder. I was trying to establish if straight up is 0° or 90° on his scale.

Goddammm. That point! Is that what you are referring to as hook?

on the picco it seemed to straight up it needs a starting point to cut
    and yes the hook
as huskihl said you are going deep and just the round part of the wheel should be sharpening the cutter

That picco I'm gonna have to play with more. It was a bad choice to learn on. I figured they are cheap so that's where I started. Bad move.

55 degrees helped but your right. There's no hook. 50 May be the ticket on those.

I'd also like to know wtf a 10* down angle is? I see these settings on my grinder.

the 10 degrees helps square up the chain to centerline of the wheel i think i may be wrong

bocefus78 , Did you have a thinner wheel on the grinder when you were messing with the Picco? Pretty sure you would have to (to make a decent hook I the smaller profile). You will learn something every time you sit down to grind.

I wouldn' worry about the 10° tilt angle until you find #'s that work. It puts a more blunt angle on the point, which lasts longer, and a sharper angle on the outside of the top plate, which cuts quicker.

Yes. I went from the thin one on the picco to the medium one for 3/8 .050

I'm starting to think I didn't profile the thin wheel enough......plus dalls 50*suggestion. It is gonna happen tomorrow am when the coffee rolls. Chains will cut or be trash. Not alot of life in em.

On your grinder, 50° is sharper than 40°? Just asking so we know what you mean when you say 40 or 50

i think 90 is at the top on those so 50 would be less sharper but then tooth may be thin on top

If 90 is on top, I'm at about 50
