So I am out cutting wafers on a North Idaho Energy log with my hatchet and this happened. I had to go to the ER and get stitches on my ring finger. I didn't strike bone.

I lopped off half my left thumb when I was 30 with a heavy hatchet, so I can sympathize. Hang in there, the hurt will go away. Just be careful of narrow doorways. I stubbed my "stub" on the door jam a couple weeks after the accident and saw stars!
Oh gawd, I know what you mean. I actually dragged my stitched finger across a Christmas gift last night and thought I was going to go through the roof. You're door jamb story gives me the willies, man. Gross.
Yup. Split my thumb in two the long way with an M9 bayonet while splitting kindling once. Got lucky and went next to the bone without hitting it. Bled like a mother. Wrapped it in paper towels and electrical taped it down tight. Kept the tape tight for a few days. Healed up so well my friend who works in the ER said she couldn't have done a better job for me. Has it been long enough to know if you lost any feeling in the finger tip? Mine is still mostly numb.
It bugged the crap out of me for quite a while. Now it feels "normal" and doesn't affect me at all. Only notice it when I think about it.
The last time this sort of thing happend to me, i had to breath in and breath out... ambulance yes/no, take off the glove... looks ok. Deep cut but no stitches needed - plenty of blood though. I hope its healing well, deep cuts and stuff on your hand/fingers can be a challenge.
It's pictures and experiences like this that had me re-think my "attempt" at making kindling. Awhile ago, some young lady (I think in New Zealand) invented a simple and much safer way to make kindling, but that contraption was far too expensive for my empty wallet. One day, as I was reading in some knife oriented site, the practice of "batoning", I had an epiphany. I bought a cheap @$$ $10 fixed blade knife and use that, as well as a nice apple-wood baton stick (I whittled with my brand new BM 940) and wow. No danger to myself as I hold the soon to be split wood with my knife and wack away with the baton stick. Works real slick and I am not missing any appendages doing so.
This made me cringe, I ripped the whole tip of my finger off using a pipe threader making conduit several years back, it was hanging by a little piece of skin...I had gloves on, and initially there wasn't any real pain, just a warm, tingly feeling. But I could feel the glove filling up with blood. Luckily, I was close enough to the local hospital that I could get there quick enough to save that fingertip, but it sure hurt! Glad you're ok, my friend. Some lessons are hard-learned, thankfully it was repairable.
