Ive looked at Aubuchon before and they didnt have what I needed. Wonder if a shear pin from a Troy Bilt will get me by in a pinch. I picked up some of those for someone else. Might not be the same diameter but may get me by for one storm. Should break if hitting something?

Calling jtakeman .... Bring a metal guy you might know this. Broke shear bolt and cant find my spare bag.

If the remaining good one has no hash marks it, that would make it a grade 2? The existing bolt has a 10 on it which sounds kind of hard for a shear bolt but it is a 10MM head.

Also, would using a Troy Bilt shear pin work in a pinch and protect my gear box?

Nice pics - same here B, just got in from clearing the driveway and pathways to the front porch / back deck / downstairs crawl space. Man, the trees are dropping ice something fierce here, sounds eerie. Like Ice Storm '08, sigh.

Got lucky, the snow we got last night after clearing formed a ice scrim on the driveway, the sn*wblower was able to take it off and shoot it with no problem. Every time I use the Toro - I'm liking it more. I may go back outside, and give it a hug. :D

Same w/ power also here, the new Cyberpower UPS's did excellent: the stove didn't skip a beat, and the ladies were watching TV and recording like 17 episodes of Major Crimes, during the event.

Only comment was "one of the UPS units is beeping every minute." .. Sure, I'll get right to work on that. :picard::wreath:

Time for some chow :beerbbq:, see ya'll later.

Sorry for jumping in - no, those Honda shear pins are metric grade, AFAIK they are metric 8.8, which is SAE grade 5 equivalent - work has a Honda sn*wblower, had to look it up for them last season.

*Wouldn't use a SAE grade 2 bolt - too soft, you'll be digging it out of the auger for hours ('cause it will deform / wrap ) if you snap one.. Ask me how I know. :picard:

    Thanks for the info !!!

I did see some online that showed 8.8 on the head. So a SAE grade 5 bolt should work, right?

It should work fine, and snap if it has to - no worries.. The auger(s) may rattle a little, if the bolts are undersized, but at least they'll turn, until you replace w/ the Honda OE pins.

I've used them (SAE grade 5 bolts) before here on the old Craftsman blower, in a pinch.. Ended up leaving them in there, they lasted almost an entire season.

Just found a conversion with tensile strength

    8.8 is 120,350 psi
    5 is 120,000 psi

That will work just fine if I can find some at HD, Lowes etc.

    Thanks man!!

bad day, broke a chain and took out a brake hose, plowing out my "job".Had to go to Bozeman for part,9 zillion late shoppers,on cold snow covered roads, took forever, accidents everywhere.Replaced hose(no garage) took forever, working for a while, then coming in to warm up(man I wish I had a garage, and my plow is too big to fit in neighbors garage.Anyway, time for a beer.It got up to 4 today, gonna warm up,but had to fix truck in case the "job" gets wind blown in.At least my cat is happy.

That is a priority! Cats won't settle for anything less. How about those hand and boot warmer pads? Took me years to get a garage. I had 4 kids with teeth needing braces, then college, cars, insurance and on and on. Once some of that let up, I finally got a furnace, and then a garage. Freezing rain here on top of 4-5 inches of snow. Clear tomorrow then several inches of snow for Christmas. Every year is different.

Forget the sn*wblower, hugging the generator right now ('cause it started) - power's out, UPS batteries are recharging.

Family's safe & warm, that's all that matters.

    Have a safe evening all.

Oh man, that just s#*ks big time. Glad you have a generator (that is working)! We lost our power just before Christmas three? years ago. Was horrid. Christmas was very difficult to enjoy. Hard to be happy when you can't bath, or flush and everything is ice cold. You be safe. hope your power loss is isolated.

Happened to my Ariens the other day. Couldn't find my stash of shear bolts just like you so in went a lower grade bolt to finish the job. Pick up two packages the day after and had a little hefty time to remove the bent bolt only after a short run, never again I'm doing that. You should be able to find the right shear bolts for a Honda at any hardware store.

    Thanks all.

Thanks Larry, I know, it's miserable when the power's out and it's cold.. It really does s%^k, big time. Taking a break from babysitting the genset for a few minutes, it's getting frosty out there. At least the Ice & branches have stopped dropping, that's a plus.

Eversource's website shows 33% in our small town out, 89% out in Washington, next town up. I have a feeling our circuit was cut to help affect repairs further up the line.. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened here. I'm sure they're working on it, and the power will be restored quickly & safely.

We are the only generator running in earshot - very different from years past. Dunno what's up w/ the folks across the way & further up the road, maybe they're all traveling for the holidays. Just glad it's 28F out, and not colder.. It could always be worse.

I consider this a good test for any further need of the Genset this season, and already have a list of things to do to make sure we're better prepared for next time, like provisioning more fuel, making sure a can of Starter fluid is always on hand (saved my Bacon this evening), getting a replacement NiCad battery for the electric start (was able to pull-start w/ Starting Fluid), picking up a few more LED lantern lights, etc.

I had just did a full service of the motor in May '17, rebuilt the carb, replaced the Igniter, checked valve clearances, pulled the generator housing and inspected / cleaned / lubed the grease points, etc. Seems to be running ok this time out. Going to order another carb rebuild kit to keep on hand, just in case. I'll end up using it in the Spring during next service.. Ethanol gas requires a carb rebuild every season on this motor, Sigh.

Time to get back out, and keep an eye on the portable power plant again. :salute:

Sorry,I do not understand the generator rampage that is going on this year,I live in the mountains,I have 2 dv35 heaters, power used to go out up here a lot,the empire heaters will keep house very warm, running the well pump and other things are just "nice" things.Yes,I will one day own a generator that will run my well pump, and most things in my house(well, maybe),just seemes to me as an added expense
