Hi Folks, I just emailed Gish Logging Inc. which is in Fort Loudon, PA just off the PA turnpike west of Harrisburg and asked about their current pricing. (I have not purchased from them and have no relationship with this business.) Some posters on other forums related good experiences dealing with this company last year and were pleased with the quality of the firewood they purchased. I might get a trailer load (1.5 cords) just to store in my basement (no bugs!) but I just double checked it and my drive is about a hundred miles one way, that's a lot of gas even at this good of a price. What, a PA firewood stash bigger than Scotty's? That is really cheap for dry hardwood firewood. Harrisburg... my latest ex was born there. Actually, all of my LTRs were with women from PA.
100 miles one way would make that some very expensive firewood Brian. But it is understandable why you considered it. If you were only closer.
I'd spend about $55 round trip in my Expedition for gas. PA Turnpike fees for my dual axle trailer in addition to my Expedition are another $6 round trip. That works out to ~ $185 per cord total, not outrageous for kiln dried firewood. Now if I could talk my little brother into letting me borrow his Dodge diesel fuel mileage would increase and I could put another half cord in the bed of his truck, driving the price per cord down to about $175. Hmmm...
Truck is a better idea. Little bro may want to go along How much can you haul per trip, 1-1/2 cord to 2 cord ? NO cutting & splitting will be a bummer, just stacking is fun & good exercise too. We'll need real time pics
My trailer is 16' x 6' with 2' sides so it can haul 1.5 cords (dry wood, not green, total GVW on trailer is 7000lbs). If I use his truck, we can put a half cord in the bed. His truck is rated for the trailering weight higher than my Expedition. I don't want to trailer that much weight that far without upgrading the tranny cooler on my Ford.
I see 40 foot trailers in that photo, what do you think they hold, 15-18 cords maybe? Did you ask them about delivering? I bet they give a volume discount, and what's trucking, something between $1.50 and $2.00/mile? That's a lot less per cord than driving your truck.

Call around to some local trucking companies and see what they would charge to go pick up and deliver a tri-axle load. You might be surprised. If you are flexible with your schedule they might be in the area and coming back empty. There's not a lot of back-haul opportunities for those guys and that should improve the rate, if not get you to one-way cost. EDIT: make sure you tell them you are looking for a "one way rate" otherwise they may just charge you for both even though they are only running empty one way.
This stuff is what we like to call "Matchlight." I love it. This was $330.00 delivered. I guess about 90% is useable. I put the super heavy pieces over in my piles as I continue to get 3 years ahead. (Also just smoked a whole pig using this... SUPERB.)
This years kiln dried seems to have a bit more "air dried" than last year. I just got 1/2 a cord delivered this evening, (split with a buddy.) As normal I toss the super heavy pieces to the side. Curiosity got the better of me and I just went out and split a few of them to get a MM reading. The highest reading came in at 20.5%. So I presume even the "air dried" they are including seems to be pretty dry. I am slowly becoming more of a fan of splits lower than than the 20% recommendation. So does anyone know where the 20% recommendation began?
Old thread but I believe I will be taking a spin over there with the wagon for a cord. I don't think I have enough for this year and I don't wanna use my stuff I split in March - would rather wait till it's primo and don't want to waste it. They're only about a half hour from me and I was happy with the load of uglies I bought up there last year for the fireplace. Might be a month or so before I do it, but pictures and a review will follow.
