Saw and add this morning for free wood. Turned out to be 1 block from me and it was easy to get. Nice load of white oak. 16 rounds all together. Will start splitting them tomorrow.
Good deal, ever see power companies cutting, check with those guys. I spent many years chasing free fire wood. Not anymore
Nice score there! I check multiple times daily and man am I on a dry spell. And if I do find free its usually still standing.
That is a beautiful find and very close to home. Hard to beat. The trimming job they did on the logs is pretty bad but that can be fixed quickly and easily.
Yeah they are very artful, just trying to get them away from the power lines. After seeing the one-sided tree the home owner asked them to just cut it down.
Nice. "Free wood is me wood," for sure. My stacks are 100% scrounged as well, and I managed 2 ricks of Sugar Maple and Mulberry last spring. At times it's like Thunderdome out there, what with the racing to curbsides all across suburbia, and battling all of the other crazies for free wood...but for some reason I never seem to tire of it.
Got it all split today. It is just thrown in a pile currently. Once I get some more of this year's wood burnt I can start stacking. JCMC just out of curiosity I checked a split with the moisture meter.
Totally agree about the utilities trimming trees. They leave the wood in nice little piles of nearly perfectly matched lengths. Cuts are clean... Not the hackneyed random lengths that you can get at the recycling center
I think that that's half the fun of it! Love driving up on a beautiful score- Except when you contact the property owner, get the address and a "come get it, it will be here waiting on you;" and you show up to a yard of brush...."someone else just drove off with all the trunk stuff, but you can have the kindling." Gee, thanks. LOL
Sweet score! Our power company contracts their tree work through a huge local tree biz that also bucks to nice length and tends to leave stuff behind for a while or sometimes forever. I do think they tend to keep the oak or hickory and sell it for firewood though. There isn't a ton of competition around here when it comes to scrounging, but I gotta say, anyone else I've encountered who is scrounging like I do when I show up to something posted on Craigslist has been totally cool, down to nerd out for a bit over burning wood, and willing to help out with loading. It reminds me of the types of dudes I'm sure mostly everyone here on FHC is. Maybe when it's a good score for everyone there's just that certain "scrounger's high"
It is a wonderful to score free rounds like that. It's been a while for me, I haven't been chasing it lately as I'm 3 yrs ahead. I do have 4 or 5 trees to cut in the neighbors woods to cut so I know I have that. I'll be on the lookout for trimmings in the spring.
