I don't go out of my way for Willow, Sycamore, Cottonwood or box elder. Burned a lot of it over the years but not my favorites. Catalpa is an odd one too as it doesn't have much heat value and the ashes are like sand.

Its really odd how the tree levels change and hardwoods like you know but can’t find (maybe a dang pallet!) oak or such up there. That would likely change the amount you burn wouldn’t it??
I guess Rope has been busy, usually he chimes in on threads like this. But he chooses that wildfire razed standing dead wood, and that’s a no brainer to burn in this place.

And it's usually what's growing next to the road!
I've got some of my longest burns from lowly alder. The downside is cleaning ash outta the stove more often.

I gotta agree with OP, Silver Maple.
Also Elm, some people get snooty about Elm, I suppose it is mainly because of splitting it.
But I think SM is underrated...and Ash is overrated IMO.

I would Love to have nothing but white ash to burn . But ya know the saying about wishing in one hand and something else in the other. I also am really opposed to buying wood or going out of my way for wood. Most around here despise poplar and prefer white spruce because they find it dead standing. Now however , there isn't much dead spruce so some people are actually putting up green wood a year in advance. Its generally dry enough around here that 4 months will dry winter cut green wood that has been processed. Rope has a good show where he's at because of some good sized fires that left lots of nice (for this area) timber standing dead and dry.

My favorite wood that others think is garbage is the kiln dried oak 4x4's our neighboring business throws in the dumpster from time to time

A lot of folks consider Apple junk around here. Idk maybe it's because it's a pain to limb. It's really very dense and gives a nice long burn time. It also is wonderful in the smoker. Love me some apple. Give me that junk all day long. :fire:

I love apple! Burns like coal, and great for cooking. I'll go out of my way even for half a truckload. Apple is our Christmas morning wood - fill the boiler, turn the thermostat up, and crack a window. :)
