Tired of the Summit and its high flue temps and low stove top temps, I knew that stove was not right from the first few fires but many told me I was full of it.
After huntindog mentioned the Drolet stoves for sale (thank you very much) I thought what have I got to lose, 695 dollars later I was the proud owner of an Austral, had a 2 week work trip so just put it in Friday.
Not as cold now but so far so good, flue temps are in line with what many report and the stove top gets nice and toasty in a short period of time.
Don't like the fan so much, this stove puts out a ton of radiant heat and could use a bigger one so I am going to put a different one on it and maybe a "hoodie".

I listened to many on my first stove too. Took me a second one to figure out it really was the stove. Congrats on the new stove!

I picked up the stove in Spencer only about 25 miles from here, it is one heck of a stove for that kind of money.
Quality of the stove is just as good as the summit IMHO.
Will keep you guys updated, I already feel much better about this stove.

Yea I wish I would have went with one of the different models of the summit, I really think the heat shields are not allowing heat transfer from the stove making for low stove top and high flue temps.
Thinking abut calling PE and have a talk with them but not sure that would go any where.

Well, I want to call PE first but with all the money it cost me I would want 1,000 dollars for it.
If any one has any idea how it could be made to work better I am interested.
I have tried everything and because of that I do believe its a heat transfer problem.

Glad to hear you got a new stove. It does radiate heat crazy well. I like how even at coal stage it's still radiating a lot of heat.

After several fires I can not believe the difference between the Drolet and the Summit (cant believe the price difference either).
Lower flue temps by far, don't have to watch the stove like a hawk to make sure the stove pipe wont melt.
Very easy to control and starting fires is a breeze with the bypass.
Does not have the crazy secondary flames the Summit had but much higher stove top temps.
It sorrta reminds me of the Nashua in the way it runs and looks, a black plain looking mean heating machine.:D

Good deal Oldspark. I have shut down my current stove, cleaned and painted it and it goes on sale in a couple of weeks. I too got sick of high flue temps and lack of heat output despite dry, high quality wood.

Best of luck with your new stove. Drolet really seems like hidden gem.

I still think it's really weird how much difference you have between the two stoves. I still wonder why that stove wouldn't work on your setup? I have never had crazy secondaries and never have flue temps over 600 on a probe thermometer even on hot burns. Just glad you are so much happier with it. When are you getting some cold temps so you can really stretch it's legs?

What brand of stove did you have?
I definitely think the Drolet is a hidden gem after running mine.

Well the Drolet runs like my Nashua did with the flue temps fairly low and high stove temp.
I knew the Summit was goofy after the first few fires in it and what others had reported on H., but for the most part I was not given credit for knowing any thing because I had been running a "smoke dragon".
I would like to get it fixed (if possible), I am willing to try another but without the heat shields this time, got a lot of money sunk into to it.
I called PE and they said they would get a hold of the dealer and distributor, we will see where this goes.
I have been able to run the Drolet up to 700 degrees as its been in the 20's a few times, its kicking out more heat then the Summit with less wood I believe.
