Most of us know the name, Oregon, for saw chains and bars, maybe not so much for splitters. This weekend we got to check out our new Oregon 22 ton splitter. Split about a cord of Elm to break it in. Another half cord of ash and maple to make sure the Elm didn't wreck it. The splitter had done a great job with the Elm. Some pieces caused the ram to really slow down, but it never met a piece it couldn't split. The ram cylinder and lines got bit hot at times while splitting the Elm. On Ash and Maple, with a little bit of Black Walnut thrown in, the splitter never slowed. The Kohler engine did exactly what it is supposed to. Started right up and delivered the power we needed. This is a beast of a splitter. Total weight is 565 lbs. The rail is two back to back half I beams with a spacer that allows the head to connect to the bottom of the rails. This makes the head's stability better than just running on the lip at the top of the rail. IMO. It will split in the horizontal or vertical position. The tongue is a full box beam and the Jack stand is a solid steel tube. The tires are highway rated. The head is cast steel and shows no sign of wear after use. It is made by Speeco to Oregon's specs., and is assembled in the USA. Overall, this is a heavy duty splitter. It may not be a pro model, but it more than surpasses most home owner needs. I think we will be very happy with this splitter. Elm is a tough wood to split, and it's the reason I got a splitter. The free wood score cost me getting a new unit, as my 5 ton electric had no chance against the Elm. In fact, a maul just bounced off this stuff. I still hate Elm, but I won't pass it up now!
Great to hear how happy you are with your splitter, but I must be imagining this as I can't see no pitchers. So Oregon allows tow speeds greater than 35 MPH?
