Morning all. Been reading over 100 pages iof great stuff here so figured I'd join in.

My family just moved to a 50+ acre property in Maine and this is our first winter with a woodstove (jotul f500) and love it! We're lifelong Mainers.

I wont be able to contribute much but have lots of questions. My experince is limited to helping FIL cut wood for many years and 2 years here on my own.

I put up just under 4 cord my first 2 years here just puttering and clearing trails. Not knowing when we'd get a stove. My wife found a great deal and now I'm kicking myself for not doing more. Not going to make it this winter on this pile !
Hoping to get about 8 cord out of the woods this winter by hand. One Bite at a time

Welcome aboard MaineMtnMan ! Don't give up on your first year supply quite yet. If you can get out before the snow starts piling up, go find some dead and downed stuff and cut/split it small. I like dead white pine as it dries quickly. If it's dead standing for a while, the sap accumulates at the base and makes for some supercharged firewood. Also, red oak limbs that die on the tree and drop several years later can be a great source of high BTU wood that's already pretty dry. My first year I built an indoor kiln that used the blower from my stove to dry the wood. Worked well enough to get me through he first winter... think outside of the box and you'll come up with something. Good luck!!

Thanks for the ideas. I have a bunch of dead white pine down from a recent storm. But like I say, I'm new to burning wood. I was always told pine is bad to burn and nobody I know touche' it cause if creosote?

Same old song, same old dance. Pine is fine. It doesn't have to cause any creosote nor burn your house down. Many use it a lot; just dry it first.
