I'm ready to really start cutting, every day if the weather allows. Just an hour each night then hard on the weekend. It looks like this storm coming in might only put down 4-8 inches.
Is that the same storm they're talking about in Maine, for Weds & Thurs? And, I know you're a ways away.
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get my truck around in our woods without trashing it because of the terrain. Have a rotted out mid 60s Jeep with 14K miles on it in the barn that I've been trying to decide what to do with though I'll have to experiment a little and see if it is more efficient to haul wood home in it or skid it behind the Ford.
You'll never want to get out of it. YouTube vids of Jeeps with tracks are cool. Snowsled clubs use them, and many other SUVs, for grooming trails. I would think you could pull some serious stuff in low range along with the lowered gearing from the tracks. Whew… very cool. I wanna see pics.
Don't hold your breath...I have two buildings with a lot of work needed before that's gonna happen. There is an old Ramsey hydraulic winch in the barn that would round out the package though Sorry about the hijack Zap...your posts always have me thinking about how I am going to move wood up there after I'm done with all the easy stuff I can get with my truck.
My wood cutting buddy and I have just finished brush busting/trail blazing to a ridge full of blowdowns. I've named it "windshear ridge" as it looks like windshear has knocked down/broken about an acre or more of nice trees. He has owned the place 15 years and never been able to access the back of his property(47 acres). He bought a 33hp AGCO tractor (front wheel assist) a few years ago but with 3 rods in his back he needs a "ground mule" LOL,,that's where I come into the picture. We've worked up 4 truckloads of firewood just clearing the trail and have a nice landing at the base of the ridge. With some more clearing at the top, we'll have room for my old truck and the firewoodin' will be much faster, that skidding logs is hard on my chains!! A good mix of cherry, hedge, hickory, some poplar and walnut so far. He only burns firewood in his man cave so most of it goes in my woodshed. Now, if the ground stays frozen and/or dry the woodshed will be full before the serious fishing starts!!
